The message was only sent to employees of the multinational insurance giant, but a <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/unitedhealth-ceo-andrew-witty-slams-aggressive-coverage-of-ceos-death\/')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/unitedhealth-ceo-andrew-witty-slams-aggressive-coverage-of-ceos-death\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/unitedhealth-ceo-andrew-witty-slams-aggressive-coverage-of-ceos-death\/\">video recording was leaked<\/a> and published by independent journalist Ken Klippenstein on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cOur role is a critical role, and we make sure that care is safe, appropriate, and is delivered when people need it,\u201d Witty said. \u201cAnd we guard against the pressures that exist for unsafe care or for unnecessary care to be delivered in a way which makes the whole system too complex and ultimately unsustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Oembed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"Oembed \" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" data-testid=\"oembed-container\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"Oembed__html\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cUnnecessary care\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United wouldn\u2019t approve my mother for the medicine her doctor said she needed until she first tried this other medicine. The alternative medicine made her \u201ctemporarily blind,\u201d the YouTuber said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">And one user on Reddit <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/interestingasfuck\/comments\/1h7n6fx\/throwback_to_when_the_unitedhealthcare_uhc\/')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/interestingasfuck\/comments\/1h7n6fx\/throwback_to_when_the_unitedhealthcare_uhc\/\"><u>posted a denial letter<\/u><\/a> from UnitedHealthcare, which showed the company refusing to pay for a power wheelchair for a child with cerebral palsy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">UnitedHealth Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Beast about the video or the ongoing backlash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s not the first time UnitedHealthcare has faced criticism for their policies surrounding denial of claims. A Senate subcommittee investigated United, as well as Humana and CVS Health, over the surge in denial rates for seniors on Medicare Advantage plans for \u201ccostly yet critical stays in post-acute care facilities\u201d for common issues like falls and strokes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to a <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024.10.17-PSI-Majority-Staff-Report-on-Medicare-Advantage.pdf')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024.10.17-PSI-Majority-Staff-Report-on-Medicare-Advantage.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024.10.17-PSI-Majority-Staff-Report-on-Medicare-Advantage.pdf\">report<\/a> published by the subcommittee in October, UnitedHealthcare\u2019s denial rate for post-acute care grew from 10.9 percent in 2020 to 22.7 percent by 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Doctors also weighed in from their standpoint, with some physician commenters on <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MurderedByWords\/comments\/1h770le\/comment\/m0ixwzk\/')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MurderedByWords\/comments\/1h770le\/comment\/m0ixwzk\/\"><u>Reddit<\/u><\/a> reflecting on their poor experiences with the company that convinced some to stop accepting UnitedHealthcare as a carrier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Dr. Helen Ouyang, an emergency physician, penned an op-ed in <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/08\/opinion\/health-care-anger.html')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/08\/opinion\/health-care-anger.html\"><i><u>The New York Times<\/u><\/i><\/a><i> <\/i>on Sunday.
