Seven teams have been eliminated from playoff contention, and eight have three wins or fewer. For those teams, the next four weeks are about building for the future as teams vie for the No. 1 pick in next year\u2019s NFL Draft.<\/p>\n<p>The Jaguars\u2019 win over the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"61\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/titans\/\">Tennessee Titans<\/a> means <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"45\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/jaguars\/\">Jacksonville<\/a> has all but exited the race for the first pick. Now 3-10 after the win, Jacksonville\u2019s odds to pick No. 1 fell from 14 percent on Dec. 6 to 3 percent after Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The win now makes this a two-team race between the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"51\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/giants\/\">New York Giants<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"53\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/raiders\/\">Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>. Our models have the No. 1 pick going to these two teams in a combined 76 percent of outcomes. No other team has higher than 10 percent odds to secure the first draft pick. The race is tight behind the Giants and Raiders, though. Six teams (Jacksonville, Tennessee, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/browns\/\">Cleveland Browns<\/a>, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"52\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/jets\/\">New York Jets<\/a>, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"49\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/patriots\/\">New England Patriots<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"35\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/panthers\/\">Carolina Panthers<\/a>) are 3-10 with four games left to play.<\/p>\n<h2>New York Giants (2-11)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5978168\/2024\/12\/08\/saints-giants-score-result-takeaways\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/12\/08163901\/GettyImages-2188919355.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">Saints beat Giants on blocked field goal, lose Carr to injury: Takeaways<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A late-game surge put the Giants in position to tie Sunday\u2019s game against the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"50\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/saints\/\">New Orleans Saints<\/a> with a 35-yard field goal with 11 seconds on the clock. A Giants overtime win would have potentially jeopardized their spot atop the draft board. Instead, the Saints blocked <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"jxKG3VHNaon1vJgg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/graham-gano-jxKG3VHNaon1vJgg\/\">Graham Gano<\/a>\u2019s kick, won 14-11 and pushed the Giants into the driver\u2019s seat for the top pick.<\/p>\n<p>The full week of preparation wasn\u2019t enough to make <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"0FMiorUFjhTAJG6B\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/drew-lock-0FMiorUFjhTAJG6B\/\">Drew Lock<\/a> (21-for-49, 227 yards, one INT) look like a winning quarterback, despite the Giants\u2019 defense holding an opponent to under 300 total yards for just the third time this season. While the Giants have the sixth-highest strength of schedule, Las Vegas\u2019 remaining schedule ranks 26th in the league over the last four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>That may get balanced out by news from Sunday\u2019s 28-13 loss to the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"60\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/buccaneers\/\">Buccaneers<\/a>: Raiders quarterback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"ImPYeV9gHSVc4sRf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/aidan-oconnell-ImPYeV9gHSVc4sRf\/\">Aidan O\u2019Connell<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5978823\/2024\/12\/08\/aidan-oconnell-knee-injury-raiders\/\">carted off the field with a knee injury<\/a> late in the third quarter. The Jets had a season-high 402 offensive yards Sunday, while <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"jcxErAcw3SOmBLdo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/aaron-rodgers-jcxErAcw3SOmBLdo\/\">Aaron Rodgers<\/a> had his first 300-yard passing game since December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>That offensive surge comes as the Jets lost their third straight game by six points or fewer despite missing key pieces on both sides of the ball. The Panthers have lost one-score games to the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"46\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/chiefs\/\">Chiefs<\/a> and Eagles in two of their last three games, a balancing act that shows competence while keeping draft stock high.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers are also the only 3-10 team not eliminated from playoff contention, putting them in the unusual spot of simultaneously competing for the No. 1 pick and a division title.
