No. But it addresses very complicated and divisive subjects,\u201d Samoylova told CNN in a video call from her home in Florida. She recalls how Margot Robbie\u2019s title character, Barbie, stops the euphoric dance floor in its tracks when she wonders aloud, \u201cdo you guys ever think about dying?\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s literally what I\u2019ve been trying to communicate,\u201d said Samoylova. \u201cThis is all pink and attractive, but we are going to die.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3poyfaw00053b6ous81yshx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samoylova, whose work is currently on display at both the Met Museum in New York and the Saatchi Gallery in London, has garnered critical acclaim for her subtle, anxiety-inducing images of Florida\u2019s collapsing pastel-pink landscapes. Samoylova\u2019s images are a far cry from the visual language of starving polar bears and blazing wildfires that often saturate converage around the environment. \u201cEverything is intertwined,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I think isolating climate change as something detached and abstract, and visually associated with melting ice caps, is very dangerous because we\u2019re in the moment right now. Every political decision is going to affect us on this daily basis.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3poyfaw00073b6oyk5pc47y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samoylova moved to Florida in 2016, where she was struck by the state\u2019s severe weather events and  aging infrastructure. She immediately began to document her new surroundings. Almost eight years on, \u201cFlood Zone\u201d feels more relevant than ever in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, the Category 3 storm that killed more than a dozen and left more than 2.6 million Floridians without power. Milton was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc-2.com\/article\/florida-hurricane-landfall-history-milton\/62570524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the third hurricane<\/a> in 2024 to make landfall in the state. But Samoylova doesn\u2019t call herself an environmental photographer. \u201cI\u2019m averse to labels,\u201d she said. \u201cI live in Miami and the choice of medium itself, to me, comes with the responsibility to reflect on our time. Several years of capturing political extremism, gentrification and environmental disintegration has given Samoylova time to think about how to package disastrous messaging. \u201cHow do you communicate these very complex subjects and make them relatable?\u201d she asks. \u201cThe trickiest part is to not make them off-putting.\u201d Come for the pink sidewalks that characterize the streets of Miami \u2014 as many tourists do \u2014 and stay for the subsequent feelings of existential dread. It\u2019s a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down, she says. \u201c(Climate change) is stigmatized, and it\u2019s become divisive, at least where I live in the US, especially in Florida. And who knows, it\u2019s likely going to be erased from the conversation again.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3poyfaw00093b6opcathn7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But beyond providing a record of Florida in crisis, there\u2019s also a dark poetry to her work \u2014 and plenty of space for creative interpretation. Samoylova\u2019s favorite pastime is haunting her own gallery installations, parking herself on a viewing bench or floating between visitors like a \u201cghost,\u201d and tuning in to how people are reading her pictures. \u201cIt\u2019s the best feeling,\u201d she said, \u201cLeaving the work open enough to where people can discuss it on their own terms without supplying too much of a didactic narrative.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3poyfaw000a3b6ob4m77jmd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One image in particular is ripe for analysis. In \u201cGator\u201d (2017),  an alligator floats above the viewer, suspended in murky, acerbic green water. While Samoylova took the photo at a nature reserve, holding the lens close to the gator\u2019s tank, there\u2019s no real context to the animal\u2019s surroundings. It could be anywhere \u2014 swimming through a flooded street or lying in wait beneath the surface of a flooded pool. \u201cIt\u2019s an allegory,\u201d said Samoylova. \u201cBecause they really do end up in people\u2019s pools like that,\u201d she said, adding that it felt like barely a month went by without a report of an alligator attack \u201cBut these beasts have been here forever. It\u2019s their native habitat, so we are the ones encroaching, not them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm3ybq1ac00033b6o6wuux3zu@published\" Samoylova sees something \u201cBallardian\u201d in the alligator photo, which she also chose to front her business card, particularly in relation to the British author J. G. Ballard\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonreviewbookshop.co.uk\/stock\/the-drowned-world-j.g.-ballard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1962<\/a> dystopian novel \u201cThe Drowned World\u201d which depicts a post-apocalyptic Earth consumed by water. \u201c(The alligator) is kind of ascending over you, and you\u2019re already on the bottom of that reservoir,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s what it feels like in Florida. I mean we\u2019re sitting here today and it\u2019s 29 degrees (Celsius) (84 degrees Fahrenheit). This is November.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3poyfaw000c3b6o1tjnjl0i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The series \u2014 along with Samoylova\u2019s own personal perspective \u2014 is not supposed to be pessimistic, however. \u201cI remain, not really an optimist, but hopeful,\u201d she told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3poyfaw000d3b6o2ah2l413@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her next project, titled \u201cTransformations,\u201d explores that sentiment \u2014 focusing primarily on capturing the many climate solutions already being implemented across the globe.
