So the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"243\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/oregon-ducks-college-football\/\">Ducks<\/a> went portal shopping and landed one of the most-seasoned quarterbacks in college football history, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5523985\/2024\/06\/03\/dillon-gabriel-oregon-football\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dillon Gabriel<\/a>, to see if he could serve as the final piece to the puzzle. He has been, and then some. Defensively, Lanning\u2019s pedigree has paid off in spades in helping the Ducks go undefeated in their first Big Ten season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP:<\/strong> <strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"zznVuRV8NoDI8xlv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/dillon-gabriel-zznVuRV8NoDI8xlv\/\">Dillon Gabriel<\/a>, QB. <\/strong>The sixth-year senior broke records for most starts by a quarterback (62) \u2014 previously held by Nix \u2014 and became the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"59\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-sports\/\">NCAA<\/a>\u2019s all-time leader in total touchdowns. He\u2019s had five 3,000-yard seasons at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. The Ducks are the lone unbeaten team in college football, the No. 1 seed and the team most likely chosen by pundits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5978565\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-bracket-predictions-picks-feldman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to win it all<\/a>. In three short years, Lanning has built the roster into a behemoth, but the Playoff is where the margins are judged harshly because the margins matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds to advance, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5701128\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-projections-odds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>according to Austin Mock<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>54 percent to make the semifinals, 33 percent to make the championship game and 21 percent to win the national title<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would be a successful Playoff?<\/strong> Win the whole thing. Oregon has been on the doorstep of a national title off and on for over a decade. With the right head coach, right staff, right personnel and most-experienced quarterback in the history of the sport, it sort of feels like if the Ducks can\u2019t do it this year, then when? They owned the Big Ten in Year 1, which is no small feat. But in the postseason, on neutral fields, anyone can be got. Georgia has a 4-0 record against teams in the Playoff but also lost to two teams that barely missed it, needed eight overtimes to beat <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"172\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/georgia-tech-yellow-jackets-college-football\/\">Georgia Tech<\/a>, beat <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"256\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/kentucky-wildcats-college-football\/\">Kentucky<\/a> by one point, was tied late with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"258\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/florida-gators-college-football\/\">Florida<\/a> and generally lacked consistency on both sides of the ball. Now it might enter the CFP without its starting quarterback, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"KKEGxZ4LaH5PgA3k\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/carson-beck-KKEGxZ4LaH5PgA3k\/\">Carson Beck<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5976978\/2024\/12\/07\/carson-beck-injury-update-georgia-qb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hurt his elbow in the SEC championship<\/a> and was replaced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5977359\/2024\/12\/07\/georgia-football-sec-championship-gunner-stockton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by Gunner Stockton<\/a>. But for all the issues, this is still a resilient and talented team that has the chance to stumble its way into a third national title in four years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"Nv8RI8P1e7cEORfU\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/trevor-etienne-Nv8RI8P1e7cEORfU\/\">Trevor Etienne<\/a>, RB. <\/strong>Beck may be injured, but Etienne is healthy for the stretch run after missing most of three games with a rib injury. Etienne, who transferred from Florida before the season, is a dynamic runner and receiver who the offense can lean on in the Playoff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"BBucAZ1ubAuYuFam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/jalon-walker-BBucAZ1ubAuYuFam\/\">Jalon Walker<\/a>, LB.<\/strong> A Swiss Army knife linebacker who moves around to try to do the most damage, Walker leads the team in tackles for loss (9.5) and is also the emotional leader of a defense that has plenty of high-level talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on:<\/strong> <strong>Mike Bobo, offensive coordinator.<\/strong> This is his second stint at Georgia, and while his offenses have always ranked high \u2014 his 2014 team still has the school record for scoring average \u2014 he has never been able to convince a loud part of the fan base. He finally got an SEC championship this year, and did it after having to switch quarterbacks at halftime. But a national title would be sweet revenge on all those critics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds to advance, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5701128\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-projections-odds\/\"><strong>according to Austin Mock<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>54 percent to make the semifinals, 31 percent to make the championship game and 13 percent to win the national title<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would be a successful Playoff?<\/strong> Considering the favorable draw, anything less than making it back to Atlanta for the national championship will be a failure. And even then, let\u2019s be honest: This is a program with two recent national titles, so being runner-up isn\u2019t good enough either.\u00a0 <em>\u2014 Seth Emerson<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Boise State Broncos (12-1)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Seed: <\/strong>3 | <strong>Committee ranking:<\/strong> 9<\/p>\n<p><strong>First game:<\/strong> Fiesta Bowl, Dec. 31, vs. winner of No. 11 SMU at No. 6 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"193\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/penn-state-nittany-lions-college-football\/\">Penn State<\/a><br \/><strong>Last national title:<\/strong> Never in the FBS, 1980 in the FCS<br \/><strong>Coach:<\/strong> Spencer Danielson (first full season)<br \/><strong>Yards per play rankings:<\/strong> No. 5 offense, No. 71 defense<\/p>\n<p><strong>How they got here:<\/strong> By hopping on the back of star running back <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"rEw4u2PC213tn0LR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/ashton-jeanty-rEw4u2PC213tn0LR\/\">Ashton Jeanty<\/a>. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"232\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/boise-state-broncos-college-football\/\">Boise State<\/a> locked up one of the automatic bids reserved for the five highest-ranked conference champions and will be the Playoff\u2019s lone Group of 5 team as the Mountain West winner. But while most assumed entering the season that the G5 representative would get the 12-seed, the Broncos ended up at No. 3 with a first-round bye.<\/p>\n<p>Boise\u2019s only loss came on Sept. 7 on a last-second field goal on the road against Oregon, which is now the undisputed No. 1 team.\u00a0 That was the only Power 4 opponent on the schedule this season, but Jeanty and Boise State ran roughshod over the rest of the schedule. Boise has often carried the banner for the Group of 5, dating back to the Statue of Liberty upset of Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5976172\/2024\/12\/07\/boise-state-unlv-mountain-west-college-football-playoff\/\">only fitting the Broncos will do it again<\/a> in the first 12-team field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP:<\/strong> <strong>Ashton Jeanty, RB. <\/strong>This one\u2019s easy: Jeanty has already registered one of the most proficient seasons in college football history. He leads the FBS in rushing with 2,497 rushing yards, good enough for fourth-best all-time, and total touchdowns with 30.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5760957\/2024\/09\/12\/boise-state-ashton-jeanty-running-back\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/09\/11161534\/GettyImages-2170119345-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">From Italy to Boise State, how RB Ashton Jeanty became a scoring sensation<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP:<\/strong> <strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"xpZB8rpndOgF1rov\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/ahmed-hassanein-xpZB8rpndOgF1rov\/\">Ahmed Hassanein<\/a>, DE.<\/strong> A stout defensive front is anchored by Hassanein, a senior and back-to-back All-Mountain West first team honoree with 42 total tackles and 8.5 sacks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on:<\/strong> <strong>Jeanty\u2019s pursuit of history<\/strong>. There are plenty of quality players on this Boise State roster, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5864177\/2024\/10\/23\/boise-state-and-ashton-jeanty-the-cinderella-in-a-steel-toe-boot\/\">Jeanty is the straw that stirs the drink<\/a>. He\u2019s vying with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"251\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/colorado-buffaloes-college-football\/\">Colorado<\/a>\u2019s <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"8gLQH3y3aik6xdy0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/travis-hunter-8gLQH3y3aik6xdy0\/\">Travis Hunter<\/a> for the Heisman Trophy. Jeanty is just 132 yards shy of breaking Barry Sanders\u2019 single-season rushing record, set over the course of 11 games in 1988.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds to advance, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5701128\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-projections-odds\/\"><strong>according to Austin Mock<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>33 percent to make the semifinals, 10 percent to make the championship game and 3 percent to win the national title<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would be a successful Playoff?<\/strong> In most years, a G5 team simply reaching the Playoff will qualify as a rousing success. That applies to this Boise State squad, especially considering it earned a first-round bye. This will go down as a historic season for the Broncos regardless of what comes next. After a 3-9 debut, Dillingham and his staff deftly made use of the transfer portal to stage a reversal no one expected. The Sun Devils beat four ranked teams, including a 45-19 rout of Iowa State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5976900\/2024\/12\/07\/arizona-state-cam-skattebo-big-12-champs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to win the Big 12 championship<\/a>. Dillingham calls his team a group of\u00a0 \u201cmisfits,\u201d but it\u2019d be a mistake to underestimate the Sun Devils. He is the nation\u2019s only back to post 1,500-plus rushing and 500-plus receiving yards and is shouldering an even bigger load with top receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"Oivdgj4nzw6CO1Qu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/jordyn-tyson-Oivdgj4nzw6CO1Qu\/\">Jordyn Tyson<\/a> out for the season because of an injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP: Xavion Alford, S.<\/strong> A first-team All-Big 12 selection, Alford is a key part of an Arizona State defense that has limited opponents to 21.3 points per game. Alford is second on the team with 82 tackles and has two interceptions. Arizona State hasn\u2019t allowed more than 23 points since Nov. 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5970979\/2024\/12\/05\/sam-leavitt-arizona-state-sun-devils-quarterback-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Leavitt<\/a>, QB. <\/strong>In his first full season, Leavitt has proven to be among the nation\u2019s top young quarterbacks. He has a strong arm and throws well on the run. He also is not afraid to run from pressure and pick up first downs. Sarkisian\u2019s high school recruiting and development paired with strategic use of the transfer portal and vast NIL resources helped construct one of the best rosters in the country. Texas\u2019 resume is lacking \u2014 the Longhorns didn\u2019t beat a team ranked in the committee\u2019s final top 25 \u2014 but 10 of its 11 wins were by double digits, with its only losses to SEC champion Georgia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"fNrvyfm4TlJMzEzE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/gunnar-helm-fNrvyfm4TlJMzEzE\/\">Gunnar Helm<\/a>, TE.<\/strong> Helm has emerged as the team\u2019s most trustworthy target in the passing game. He leads the team with 49 receptions and has caught 83.1 percent of his targets, also a team-high. He moves the chains and is an invaluable red zone target that opponents must account for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"jqeBkaIqqlSGRpQV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/anthony-hill-jr-jqeBkaIqqlSGRpQV\/\">Anthony Hill Jr.<\/a>, LB.<\/strong> He leads the team in tackles (90) and tackles for loss (16) and is an explosive, versatile athlete who causes problems for opposing offenses. Hill is just a sophomore but has played at an All-America level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on: Quinn Ewers, QB.<\/strong> Texas\u2019 third-year starter has been good but inconsistent. Since returning from an oblique injury on Oct. 12, he has thrown 17 touchdown passes and seven interceptions (that ratio ranks 53rd in the FBS in that span), averaged 7.2 yards per attempt (69th) and completed 64.1 percent of his passes (45th). When Ewers is on, he\u2019s one of the nation\u2019s best, but we haven\u2019t seen that level of play consistently. Having a backup with a ton of talent and a famous last name (<a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"8aCrj122lbJaFEHG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/arch-manning-8aCrj122lbJaFEHG\/\">Arch Manning<\/a>) harbored intrigue throughout the year, but Sarkisian only benched Ewers once for Manning, with the rest of the redshirt freshman\u2019s snaps coming in mop-up duty or in place of an injured Ewers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds to advance, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5701128\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-projections-odds\/\"><strong>according to Austin Mock<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>73 percent to make the second round, 61 percent to make the semifinals, 29 percent to make the championship game and 18 percent to win the national title<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would be a successful Playoff?<\/strong> Winning the national championship is the goal, but making the title game would still be a notable accomplishment. Texas already made the semifinal last year. Carter garners extra attention from opponents and can crack a game open with his athleticism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on: Drew Allar, QB.<\/strong> Penn State\u2019s offense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5977571\/2024\/12\/08\/penn-state-oregon-big-ten-championship-college-football\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looked the best it has all season<\/a> during the conference championship game despite the loss \u2014 and Allar\u2019s two interceptions. A former five-star recruit, Allar has the ability to make special, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/\">NFL<\/a>-level throws. First, the Nittany Lions need to beat SMU in Beaver Stadium \u2014 in a game that will be a White Out \u2014 and then see if they can upend Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Franklin\u2019s teams are 1-14 against top-five opponents. But the Irish have been among the most impressive teams nationally since, winning 10 in a row. Notre Dame finally has an offense that can complement Al Golden\u2019s elite defense. The schedule makes it hard to get a complete read on the Irish, with just one CFP Top 25 win (Army) and plenty of blowouts of weaker Power 4 competition. That moment is coming. For much of the year, it looked destined for a rematch with Oregon in the Big Ten title game, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5958582\/2024\/11\/30\/michigan-ohio-state-football-score-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an upset loss to Michigan<\/a> as a three-touchdown favorite at the end of the season crushed those dreams. Still, two top-10 wins against Penn State and Indiana helped Ohio State earn a home CFP game. The expectations have been high for Ohio State all season, but they have actually gotten higher after the loss to Michigan. This team is different, leaning on its defense and running game. Tennessee\u2019s defensive front is its strength, and coordinator Tim Banks\u2019 unit plays aggressive and aims for negative plays and turnovers. First-year starter quarterback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"65sykR4evNtfEgYF\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/nico-iamaleava-65sykR4evNtfEgYF\/\">Nico Iamaleava<\/a> has shown flashes and made good on his potential, though he\u2019s not a star yet. The Vols tripped up on the road at Arkansas but beat Alabama at home to flip the odds back in their favor of making the field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"smMvjJ2LVAW8mtlR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/dylan-sampson-smMvjJ2LVAW8mtlR\/\">Dylan Sampson<\/a>, RB. <\/strong>Sampson has been a bell cow, breaking the program\u2019s 95-year old record for rushing touchdowns with 22. His 256 carries and 1,485 rushing yards are both in the top 10 nationally. No SEC team held him under 90 yards this year, though he also had more than 150 yards in just one game: the season finale against <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"260\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/vanderbilt-commodores-college-football\/\">Vanderbilt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"tBzuNtwg8is3q3Un\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/james-pearce-jr-tBzuNtwg8is3q3Un\/\">James Pearce Jr.<\/a>, Edge. <\/strong>The likely first-round pick is the star of an experienced, physical defensive line that\u2019s one of the nation\u2019s best. He leads the team with 11 tackles for loss, has freakish speed and flourishes in obvious passing downs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on: Nico Iamaleava, QB.<\/strong> The Buckeyes have the best defense he\u2019s faced this season. The Vols have generally struggled on the road this year, as they didn\u2019t score in the second half of their trip to Georgia and didn\u2019t score in the first half of their trip to Arkansas, both losses. A stretch like that is the kind of thing that will end a season, and Iamaleava is still the guy with the ball in his hand every play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds to advance, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5701128\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-projections-odds\/\"><strong>according to Austin Mock<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>26 percent to make the second round, 8 percent to make the semifinals, 4 percent to make the championship game and 2 percent to win the national title<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would be a successful Playoff?<\/strong> The Vols are mildly disappointed to not be selected as a host, but it has been predictable for a couple weeks. Before the SEC\u2019s implosion late in the season, there was no guarantee the Vols would even be in the field. With a first-year starter at quarterback, winning the first-round game in Columbus would make it impossible to categorize the season as anything other than a success. Cignetti came in from James Madison defiantly predicting instant success and delivered, thanks largely to several <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"1197\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/james-madison-dukes-college-football\/\">JMU<\/a> transfers and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"8gbHTIb0TeenpgAj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/kurtis-rourke-8gbHTIb0TeenpgAj\/\">Kurtis Rourke<\/a>, the quarterback he got from Ohio. The Hoosiers won 11 of 12 games, losing 38-15 at Ohio State, a result that threatened their standing before some key upsets helped. Indiana doesn\u2019t have a ranked win to its name but does have consistent domination, beating FBS teams by an average of 29.3 points per game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP: Kurtis Rourke, QB<\/strong>. The nation\u2019s leader in pass efficiency rating (181.38) has been solid to the point of spectacular, completing 70.4 percent of his passes for 2,827 yards and 27 touchdowns, with just four interceptions. He is well supported with productive backs in <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"jyVv8VgweCJobxtZ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/justice-ellison-jyVv8VgweCJobxtZ\/\">Justice Ellison<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"ZGMIgE8hTN8DdZL7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/ty-son-lawton-ZGMIgE8hTN8DdZL7\/\">Ty Son Lawton<\/a>, several capable pass catchers and tremendous scheming and coaching.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"fWHjPJiYNkfmEU3s\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/mikail-kamara-fWHjPJiYNkfmEU3s\/\">Mikail Kamara<\/a>, DE. <\/strong>This is a close call over inside linebacker <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"JYWRzGd62TOKfn5q\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/aiden-fisher-JYWRzGd62TOKfn5q\/\">Aiden Fisher<\/a>. Kamara, a James Madison transfer, has 10 sacks after he collected 6.5 in 2023 for the Dukes in the Sun Belt. He elevated his game for the Big Ten, as offensive coordinators who have had to double team him regularly can attest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotlight on: Offensive line<\/strong>. Depth is an issue for the most talented teams in college football, let alone a team like Indiana. And the loss of starting left guard <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"4XiEZjyweezjI6i4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/drew-evans-4XiEZjyweezjI6i4\/\">Drew Evans<\/a> to an Achilles tear before the Michigan game has hurt. The Hoosiers struggled to protect in the second half of that 20-15 win and at Ohio State. Indiana is going to need to manufacture some rushing yards and keep Rourke comfortable to have a chance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds to advance, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5701128\/2024\/12\/08\/college-football-playoff-projections-odds\/\"><strong>according to Austin Mock<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>35 percent to make the second round, 13 percent to make the semifinals, 6 percent to make the championship game and 2 percent to win the national title<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would be a successful Playoff? <\/strong>One win would be a success. Realistically, a competitive loss is a success. Historically speaking, success has been achieved already. SMU finished alone atop the ACC standings in their first season with an 8-0 record. But they didn\u2019t play <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"176\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/miami-hurricanes-college-football\/\">Miami<\/a>, Clemson or <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"167\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/syracuse-orange-college-football\/\">Syracuse<\/a>. Facing Clemson in the ACC championship, the Mustangs fell behind 31-14 entering the fourth quarter. They rallied to tie the game with 20 seconds left before Clemson kicked a 56-yard field goal as time expired. SMU had to sweat it out Sunday morning but made the field as the last at-large team in, ahead of Alabama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offensive MVP:<\/strong> <strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"7UbTKdhMkUb2Lk7m\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/kevin-jennings-7UbTKdhMkUb2Lk7m\/\">Kevin Jennings<\/a>, QB:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t take over the starting job until a few games into the season, but he kick-started this offense with his decision-making, athleticism and zip on throws. Nick Saban called him one of the most underrated players in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive MVP:<\/strong> <strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"28kEm5PBKkP3OEga\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/kobe-wilson-28kEm5PBKkP3OEga\/\">Kobe Wilson<\/a>, LB:<\/strong> Wilson does everything for this underrated SMU defense, with 110 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions. Just seven days before Clemson beat SMU in Charlotte to clinch its spot, the Tigers lost an emotional rivalry game to South Carolina and were devastated about missing the opportunity to state their case for an at-large bid. But Syracuse beat Miami in the final game of the regular season, which propelled the Tigers into the conference championship game and had Swinney thanking Orange coach Fran Brown all last week.
