In response, the Chinese government last week announced it would <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/03\/world\/asia\/china-minerals-semiconductors.html\" title=\"\">ban the export<\/a> of several rare minerals to the United States and imposed sanctions on more than a dozen U.S. defense firms and defense industry executives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Together, the moves by Beijing signal its willingness to engage in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/27\/business\/china-retaliation-skydio.html\" title=\"\">supply chain warfare<\/a> as the policy contest over trade and the control of technology escalates between the world\u2019s two largest economies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The battle has made A.I. chips into one of the world\u2019s most sought-after technologies, and Nvidia has cornered the market, accounting for 90 percent of global sales by the end of last year. Nvidia\u2019s dominance helped it become one of the most valuable companies in the world over the past year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">China\u2019s State Administration for Market Regulation said on Monday that it was investigating Nvidia for violating commitments made during its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, a company that makes computer networking equipment.
