Of course, the Globes cover TV as well, and may well in years to come find themselves in a new era of relevance as so many, rightly or wrongly, claim the distinction between the two is blurring. It is certainly supposed to be a new era of respectability for the Globes, which (it hopes) has put to bed accusations of non-diversity and kickbacks. It\u2019s hoping also that this year\u2019s presenter Nikki Glaser will do better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/jan\/08\/jo-koy-golden-globes-host-2024\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">last year\u2019s icily received turn from Jo Koy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">It\u2019s a great Globes list for streamer Netflix, hip distributor A24 and indeed the Cannes film festival, whose films are well represented. But awards lists will always annoy someone and this year that someone is going to be President-elect Trump, who will no doubt be infuriated at the best actor (drama) nomination for Sebastian Stan, who plays young Trump in the early-years biopic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/oct\/20\/the-apprentice-review-ali-abbasi-donald-trump-roy-cohn-biopic-jeremy-strong-sebastian-stan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Apprentice<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/oct\/14\/donald-trump-apprentice-film-attacks\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Trump hates it<\/a>, although I thought the movie went pretty easy on him. Jeremy Strong picks up a best supporting actor nomination for playing Trump\u2019s toxic mentor Roy Cohn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Scanning the list anxiously for snubs, I find myself disappointed that there is nothing for Cillian Murphy\u2019s tremendous Irish drama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/feb\/16\/small-things-like-these-review-magdalene-laundries-cillian-murphy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Small Things Like These<\/a>, nothing for Jane Schoenbrun\u2019s inspired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/article\/2024\/jul\/24\/i-saw-the-tv-glow-review-90s-telly-addict-chiller-set-to-be-future-classic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">I Saw the TV Glow<\/a>, nothing for Saoirse Ronan in the excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/sep\/27\/the-outrun-review-saoirse-ronan-amy-liptrot-orkney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Outrun<\/a>, or for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2024\/dec\/09\/mike-leigh-and-marianne-jean-baptiste-on-rage-sex-and-insults-theres-an-intolerance-in-society-now\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Marianne-Jean Baptiste<\/a> in Mike Leigh\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/article\/2024\/sep\/07\/hard-truths-review-a-mike-leigh-classic-of-day-to-day-disillusionment-and-courage\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Hard Truths<\/a>. But what a coup for Jacques Audiard\u2019s phantasmagoric musical crime-comedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/oct\/27\/emilia-perez-review-jacques-audiard-zoe-saldana-karla-sofia-gascon-selena-gomez-netflix-riotously-entertaining-trans-mexican-cartel-musical\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/a>, an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular about a Mexican cartel gangster getting gender reassignment surgery, with 10 nominations. This is a film which has been a big talking point among awards voters since its premiere in Cannes \u2013 although I have to say I found it a little contrived and sometimes bizarre in not exactly the right way. Yet audiences have thrilled to Audiard\u2019s pure ambition and it looks as if Globes voters feel the same way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Elsewhere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/article\/2024\/sep\/05\/the-brutalist-review-epic-adrien-brody-postwar-architectural-drama-stuns-and-electrifies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Brutalist<\/a>, Brady Corbet\u2019s toweringly mysterious and provocative epic in the manner of Ayn Rand is well represented on the list, with nods including best actor for Adrien Brody as a passionately demanding Hungarian architect in postwar America whose genius is recognised and betrayed by an impulsive plutocrat, played by Guy Pearce. This was the visionary-architect film that Coppola\u2019s Megalopolis should have been, but wasn\u2019t. Edward Berger\u2019s vastly entertaining and stylish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/nov\/28\/conclave-review-papal-election-ralph-fiennes-john-lithgow\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Conclave<\/a>, the Vatican plot mystery adapted from Robert Harris, is up there also, including best actor for Ralph Fiennes as a troubled cardinal who detects a whiff of sulphur in the machinations to succeed the newly departed pope. The odds are shortening for a Fiennes win here and at the Oscars, although he and Brody are up against a colossal crowdpleaser in the form of Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet for his impressive impersonation of Bob Dylan in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/nov\/22\/timothee-chalamet-reactions-bob-dylan-biopic-a-complete-unknown\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">A Complete Unknown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Sean Baker\u2019s thrilling drama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/article\/2024\/may\/21\/anora-review-stellar-turn-from-mikey-madison-in-sex-work-non-love-story\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Anora<\/a>, about a lap dancer who marries a Russian plutocrat\u2019s son, and Coralie Fargeat\u2019s freaky body-horror satire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/article\/2024\/may\/19\/the-substance-review-demi-moore-coralie-fargeat\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Substance<\/a> continue their amazing run of success with five nominations each, with the latter getting a best actress (musical or comedy) nod for Demi Moore as a neurotic fading star willing to try anything to stay beautiful.
