That was enough for the astronomical community to bestow upon them their own celestial object category: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/PSJ\/acb697\">dark comets<\/a>.\u201d Now, with the finding of seven more of these objects, researchers could start on a new set of questions.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"cmueo\">\u201cWe had a big enough number of dark comets that we could begin asking if there was anything that would differentiate them,\u201d said Darryl Seligman, a postdoctoral fellow in the department of Physics at Michigan State University, East Lansing, and lead author of the new paper. \u201cBy analyzing the reflectivity,\u201d or albedo, \u201cand the orbits, we found that our solar system contains two different types of dark comets.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"37rpp\"><b>Two Kinds of Dark Comets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"c3b70\">The study\u2019s authors found that one kind, which they call outer dark comets, have similar characteristics to <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/9p-tempel-1\/\">Jupiter-family comets<\/a>: They have highly <a href=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/glossary\/eccentricity.html\">eccentric<\/a> (or elliptical) orbits and are on the larger side (hundreds of meters or more across).<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1r9l8\">The second group, inner dark comets, reside in the inner solar system (which includes Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars), travel in nearly circular orbits, and are on the smaller side (tens of meters or less).<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6igdv\">Like so many astronomical discoveries, Seligman and Farnocchia\u2019s research not only expands on our knowledge of dark comets, but it also raises several additional questions: Where did dark comets originate? What causes their anomalous acceleration?
