Such a jump could become far easier with just a single mutation, according to new research.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The virus has a fatality rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/php\/technical-report\/h5n1-06052024.html\">50 percent<\/a> in humans, so animal infections need to be carefully monitored and tightly controlled to stop the spreading <span>strain of <\/span>H5N1 adapting into something that one person can give directly to another.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>While several of these morphing mutations are usually needed to put humans in danger from avian  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-influenza\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"103478\" data-postid=\"146163\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">influenza<\/a>, this time the transformation process could be quicker, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in California found.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The findings demonstrate how easily this virus could evolve to recognize human-type receptors,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/news-and-events\/press-room\/2024\/20241205-wilson-paulson-h5n1.html\">says<\/a> infectious disease scientist Ting-Hui Lin, first author of the new study.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146166\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/VirusMutation.jpg\" alt=\"Bird flu mutation\" width=\"642\" height=\"509\" class=\"wp-image-146166 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/VirusMutation.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/VirusMutation-523x415.jpg 523w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/VirusMutation-600x476.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Receptor binding site of the A\/Texas\/37\/2024 hemagglutinin Leu226 mutant (yellow) in complex with the human receptor analog LSTc (cyan). (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/news-and-events\/press-room\/2024\/20241205-wilson-paulson-h5n1.html\">Scripps Research<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A virus needs to locate compatible receptors on host cells to trigger an infection \u2013 something H5N1 has found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-deadly-pandemic-now-threatens-the-most-remote-place-on-earth\">in birds and animals<\/a>, but not humans.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The researchers investigated the H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain of the virus found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/teen-hospitalized-in-first-human-bird-flu-case-in-canada\">recent human infections<\/a>, finding that a single amino acid mutation in a key protein would be enough to switch the virus target from avian-type receptors to human-type receptors.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This mutation, labeled Q226L, could act like a new pair of glasses for the virus, allowing it to recognize landing points on human cells.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our experiments revealed that the Q226L mutation could significantly increase the virus&#8217; ability to target and attach to human-type receptors,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/news-and-events\/press-room\/2024\/20241205-wilson-paulson-h5n1.html\">says<\/a> biochemist James Paulson.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This mutation gives the virus a foothold on human cells that it didn&#8217;t have before, which is why this finding is a red flag for possible adaptation to people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>We have seen humans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/human-cases-of-bird-flu-confirmed-to-be-occurring-undetected-in-the-us\">contract this flu<\/a> from animals after being in close contact with them. If the virus can latch onto cells specific to our airways, it would be all too easy for the pathogen to pass person-to-person via aerosols spread through talking or sneezing.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The discovery emphasizes the need to track H5N1 closely and continue to monitor for new strains.
