At the time, Foxx was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jamie-foxx-experienced-medical-complication-in-recovery-1235373052\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jamie-foxx-experienced-medical-complication-in-recovery-1235373052\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hospitalized<\/a> for an undisclosed medical complication, with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jamie-foxx-shares-update-recovery-medical-complication-1235541779\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jamie-foxx-shares-update-recovery-medical-complication-1235541779\/\">few details<\/a> shared since to explain what happened to the Oscar-winning actor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThough titled <em>Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was\u2026 <\/em>on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\">Netflix<\/a> and labeled a comedy special, Foxx\u2019s reveal is bigger than its billing. (He even picked up an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/golden-globes-2025-snubs-surprises-jon-m-chu-diego-luna-1236081485\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/golden-globes-2025-snubs-surprises-jon-m-chu-diego-luna-1236081485\/\">early 2025 Golden Globe nomination<\/a> for the special.) Through a mixture of laughter, music and sobering truth, Foxx explains what happened to him to the best of his recollection, getting candid about his rehab and recovery process. For the special he returned to Atlanta, which is where he suddenly fell ill while filming the Netflix comedy <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/back-in-action-trailer-jamie-foxx-cameron-diaz-netflix-1236061436\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/back-in-action-trailer-jamie-foxx-cameron-diaz-netflix-1236061436\/\"><em>Back in Action<\/em> also starring Cameron Diaz<\/a>. Atlanta, he reveals, is also where he started doing comedy back in 1991. So he is very much getting back to basics, classifying how he snatched his life back from death as a \u201ccome-back-to-God\u201d moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe special begins with videos of fans speculating about Foxx\u2019s illness. His daughter Corinne Foxx then takes the stage to thank the audience for coming. \u201cThis is a special moment for me and my family. It is a blessing to even be here,\u201d she says, before introducing her dad with a rousing, \u201cGive it up for my dad, the <em>real <\/em>Jamie Motherfucking Foxx.\u201d The curtain rises and there is Foxx with shades on and hands in heart emojis over his chest expressing his love for the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFoxx walks out with a fist raised and the audience frantically cheers his return. It\u2019s so emotional, he wipes away tears. \u201cYou have no idea how good this feels,\u201d he says as he basks in the moment, shouting \u201cAtlanta, I\u2019m back\u201d and dancing between tears. \u201cI was fighting for my life, but I\u2019m here in front of you.\u201d When he says, \u201cAtlanta, saved my life,\u201d the crowd responds to his \u201cGod is good\u201d and \u201call the time.\u201d The exchange is a recognition of his Black, Southern roots and that he is right at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe internet tried to kill me, though,\u201d he continues, in the moment that would go on to spawn <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/maryroeloffs\/2024\/12\/02\/how-a-story-about-sean-combs-and-jamie-foxxs-mystery-illness-went-viral\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/maryroeloffs\/2024\/12\/02\/how-a-story-about-sean-combs-and-jamie-foxxs-mystery-illness-went-viral\/\">headlines<\/a> about the special around Foxx and Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs. \u201cThey said I was paralyzed. They said I couldn\u2019t walk. Well, look at me now,\u201d he says, as he dances to Unk\u2019s \u201cWalk it Out.\u201d He then refers to the unsubstantiated online rumors that Diddy was involved in his hospitalization. \u201cThe internet said that Puffy tried to kill me, that\u2019s what the internet was saying,\u201d he says. \u201cI know what you thinkin\u2019\u2026. <em>did-he<\/em>?\u201d He also adds a reference to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/music-news\/inside-diddy-parties-celebs-glamour-1236023780\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/music-news\/inside-diddy-parties-celebs-glamour-1236023780\/\">Diddy\u2019s now-infamous and so-called \u201cfreak-off\u201d parties<\/a>: \u201cI left them parties early\u2026 I was out by nine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFoxx soon changes to a more serious tone as he shares that \u201cwe still don\u2019t know what happened to me\u201d a little over six minutes into the special. Recounting what he knows about what happened to him on April 11, 2023, he turns somber, again growing emotional as he sits down to say, \u201cWhat had happened was\u2026\u201d and explains how it all began with him having a very bad headache. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t remember 20 days,\u201d he says. His retelling is relatable in that the first doctor dismissed his illness. But his sister, Deidra Dixon, knew he was not himself and drove him around looking for hospitals until she decided to stop at Atlanta\u2019s Piedmont Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThere, a doctor wearing a L.A. Lakers jersey let her know that her big brother was having a \u201cbrain bleed\u201d that led to a stroke and that he needed immediate surgery. Needless to say, the comedy pauses here. But it\u2019s Jamie Foxx so, as he talks of his sister saving his life, he says \u201csometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying\u201d and he does just that as he alludes to dying and coming back. (He makes another Diddy joke, saying the devil \u201cor perhaps Puffy\u201d was waiting for him at the end of the tunnel.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhat he describes is harrowing. The doctor told his sister that he may make a full recovery from the stroke, but it\u2019s going to be the \u201cworst year of his life.\u201d He says that\u2019s why he disappeared from public view, and credits his family for protecting him during his recovery. On May 4, he woke up and found himself in a wheelchair and had no idea why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAccepting his condition wasn\u2019t easy, as he admits to initially letting his ego get in the way of his recovery, which was substantial, during his stay in Chicago. \u201cThat\u2019s old man stuff,\u201d he says of learning how dire his condition was. He depicts the hard road ahead, while at first joking about wanting to keep his \u201cpickle\u201d private from his female nurse before finding out she had already been bathing him for a month and a half, and crediting a superwoman named Holly for coaching him, <em>Karate Kid<\/em>-style, to find his will to fight. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEventually he saw a psychiatrist, which led him to deep conversations with God. In that exchange, he admits it took a minute to adjust his attitude and fight back. To do so, he took the only route he knew how to get well, and that\u2019s humor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIf I can stay funny, I can stay alive\u201d became his mantra. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLeaning into his humor, he impersonates Denzel Washington, Dave Chappelle, Mike Tyson, Jay-Z and even President-elect Donald Trump. It\u2019s a unique blend of pop culture, old and new, to deliver a personal testimony of sickness and healing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLooking back, he says of his vitals that they feared he would die in the first 15 days. He credits his turnaround to his teenage daughter Anelise sneaking into his hospital room and playing her guitar, and she then takes the stage to play her guitar to the audience\u2019s delight and father\u2019s cheering. Foxx shares his personal testimony in a speaking song, magnifying the power and grace of God during his illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tResuming the humor portion of his show, he recounts some post-recovery encounters with rapper T.I. and Halle Berry, and goes through his memorable roles from <em>Any Given Sunday<\/em>, <em>Ali<\/em>, <em>Ray<\/em>, <em>Django<\/em> and even <em>Rio<\/em> before launching into his own hit songs as a singer. For his finale, he returns to the piano to share a tailor-made testimony about his \u201csecond chance,\u201d including Foxx having to debunk rumors that he was \u201ccloned\u201d when <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jamie-foxx-appearance-medical-complication-april-1235532208\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jamie-foxx-appearance-medical-complication-april-1235532208\/\">spotted<\/a> during his recovery, before returning to a spirit of gratitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat spirit of thanks dominates in the Netflix special. Billing this as a \u201ccomedy special\u201d doesn\u2019t seem quite right for the show, which is more akin to LeBron James <em>The Decision<\/em>, when he left Cleveland for Miami, only more entertaining. While it\u2019s raw and at times uneven, there is great potential for a one-man show, perhaps on Broadway, should Foxx ever want to revisit this difficult and perhaps defining moment.
