Hsieh Jih-sheng, a senior official in Taiwan\u2019s ministry of defense told reporters. \u201cThe numbers are indeed astonishing,\u201d he said, referring to the surge of Chinese vessels in the waters. Sun Li-fang, a spokesman for Taiwan\u2019s defense ministry, said the maritime operations were the largest that Taiwan has seen since 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The officials said that Taiwan was on high alert in response to the Chinese ships, many of which were in waters off Taiwan\u2019s southwest, east and northwest coasts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">China\u2019s intentions were not immediately clear. There were no official announcements from Beijing that its forces were holding exercises.
