Their incidences of cardiovascular disease \u2013\u2013 including strokes, heart attacks and heart failures\u2013\u2013 were collected from the national health registers through 2019, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx00083b6mtkxg6sml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers looked at sugar consumption in three categories: sugary beverages, sweets like pastries, and toppings like honey or sugar added to tea or coffee, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx00093b6m7zngai78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consuming sweet drinks (all sodas and fruit drinks that were not pure fruit juices) was associated with a higher risk of heart disease than those individuals who had more baked treats, but surprisingly those participants who consumed the least amount of sugar did not end up with the lowest risk of heart disease, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000a3b6m3m1wfota@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is important to note that the study was observational, meaning that while researchers found associations, they can\u2019t say for sure that the ways people ate sugar caused the different rates of heart disease, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000b3b6mraximbpo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They did adjust for other factors that might also influence the association, including age, sex, alcohol, smoking, exercise level and body mass index, or BMI, she added. But there may be others that they have not accounted for in their analysis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000c3b6mh82g4wcp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The results are also limited by the population studied, which is primarily of European descent, said Dr. Robert Eckel, professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus and former president of the American Heart Association.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000d3b6m1uk8xk2n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Outside factors might be behind the association between low added sugar intake and increased cardiovascular risk, since there are no biological mechanisms to explain it, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000e3b6m4cre2v3m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne theory is that people with very low sugar intake might be replacing sugar with other unhealthy foods or nutrients,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000f3b6mvtlznpil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It could also be that those who limit their sugar consumption to extremely low levels are doing so for an existing health condition, or that they have very restrictive diets overall that do not provide all the important nutrients they need, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000g3b6mhwehot4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She also points to a Swedish social tradition called \u201cfika,\u201d where people gather for coffee and pastries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000h3b6m05ohyf9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis practice is so ingrained in Swedish society that many workplaces have scheduled \u2018fika breaks\u2019 daily,\u201d Janzi said. \u201cIt\u2019s possible that the consumption of treats during these social interactions is strongly linked to social relationships, which have previously been linked to cardiovascular health.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000i3b6mt4nx8p1c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The connection between low sugar and higher cardiovascular risk does need to be studied further, however, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000j3b6mgi6rimbv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are some biological theories behind why sugary drinks are more associated with heart disease than pastries, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000k3b6mq06dwtoj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLiquid sugars are absorbed more rapidly in the digestive system since they do not require the same breakdown processes as solid foods,\u201d she said. \u201cSolid sugars are often part of foods that contain other nutrients like fiber, proteins, and fats.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000l3b6mu8edohwm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those nutrients slow digestion, meaning there is a more gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000m3b6mf5n02t4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While fats, fiber and proteins in solid food leave you feeling fuller longer, liquid sugars often don\u2019t fill you up \u2013\u2013 which can lead to appetite dysregulation and the consumption of too many calories, she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000n3b6m7j06lp5c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDifferent sources of added sugars also vary in their consumption patterns, which could further explain why they associate differently with cardiovascular disease risk,\u201d Janzi added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000o3b6mqsppayts@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study suggests that you don\u2019t need to cut out all sugar to prevent cardiovascular disease, Janzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000p3b6mtvpwv0i9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe all enjoy a dessert,\u201d Eckel added. \u201cShould we not have birthday cake and ice cream when your kids are having a birthday party?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000q3b6m31akxqps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But most Americans are probably consuming too much added sugar, and sweetened drinks are a good place to make reductions, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000r3b6m318d15ei@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sugar\/added-sugars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Heart Association recommends<\/a> no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day for women and 9 for men.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000s3b6me23jy5uh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A sustainable reduction might mean taking steps to reduce your sugar instead of going cold turkey.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000t3b6mp99v7ags@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCut back by one serving per day until you\u2019re down to one drink per day,\u201d registered dietitian and CNN contributor Lisa Drayer said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/03\/health\/sugary-drinks-diet-sodas-soft-drink-linked-to-health-issues-wellness\/index.html\">a previous story<\/a>. \u201cThen aim for one every other day until you can phase out soft drinks entirely.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4houbwx000u3b6men6ib6ci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAlternate with seltzer\/sparkling water can help you cut back,\u201d she added. \u201cEventually you can replace soft drinks with seltzer or sparkling water if you are craving carbonation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n
