Trump mocked Canada\u2019s prime minister in a post late Monday that described him as \u201cGovernor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/113626786987358864\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">social media post<\/a> also cited a surprise dinner between the two leaders at Mar-a-Lago over the Thanksgiving weekend and called it \u201ca pleasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Canada, of course, is the second-largest country on earth by size, with a population of roughly 40 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!\u201d Mr. Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The president-elect has promised to impose tariffs of 25 percent on exports from Canada and Mexico on his first day in office next month unless the two countries do more to stem the arrival of undocumented migrants and drugs <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/26\/us\/trump-canada-border-migrants.html\" title=\"\">into the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If Mr. Trump follows through on his pledge, it would upend the trade agreement among the three countries and be economically ruinous for Canada\u2019s economy, which is heavily dependent on exports, particularly of oil and autos, to the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trudeau&#8217;s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the two men extensively discussed the effects of tariffs, among other issues during their dinner, there was no indication afterward that Mr. Trudeau had changed Mr. Trump\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After Mr. Trump announced his tariff threat, Mr. Trudeau took a measured tone, suggesting that the tariff dispute can be resolved amicably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But more recently, Mr. Trudeau appears to be shifting toward a more assertive posture and on Monday suggested that Canada was prepared to respond with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports, echoing a similar stance by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/26\/world\/mexico-canada-trump-tariffs.html\" title=\"\">President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trudeau noted that Canada pursued a similar strategy during Mr. Trump\u2019s first administration when the United States applied tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe will, of course, as we did eight years ago, respond to unfair tariffs in a number of ways, and we\u2019re still looking at the right ways to respond,\u201d Mr. Trudeau <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trudeau-trump-freak-out-tariff-threat-1.7405830\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told a business audience in Halifax, Nova Scotia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While Mr. Trudeau called the possible American tariffs \u201cabsolutely devastating,\u201d he continued to urge calm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOne of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/10\/world\/canada\/trump-trudeau-canada-tariffs.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President-elect Donald J.
