{"id":135669,"date":"2024-12-11T03:50:49","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T20:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=135669"},"modified":"2024-12-11T03:50:49","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T20:50:49","slug":"arctic-tundra-is-now-emitting-more-carbon-than-it-absorbs-us-agency-says-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=135669","title":{"rendered":"Arctic tundra is now emitting more carbon than it absorbs, US agency says | Arctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/arctic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Arctic<\/a> tundra is undergoing a dramatic transformation, driven by frequent wildfires that are turning it into a net source of carbon dioxide emissions after millennia of acting as a carbon sink, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">This drastic shift is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/arctic-tundra-becoming-source-of-carbon-dioxide-emissions\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">detailed<\/a> in Noaa\u2019s 2024 Arctic Report Card, which revealed that annual surface air temperatures in the Arctic this year were the second-warmest on record since 1900.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cOur observations now show that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/arctic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Arctic<\/a> tundra, which is experiencing warming and increased wildfire, is now emitting more carbon than it stores, which will worsen climate change impacts,\u201d said Rick Spinrad, a Noaa administrator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The report, led by scientists from the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Falmouth, Massachusetts, found that the Arctic is warming faster than the global average for the 11th year in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Currently, it is warming at up to four times the global rate, the authors found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Climate warming has dual effects on the Arctic. While it stimulates plant productivity and growth, which remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it also leads to increased surface air temperatures that cause permafrost to thaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">When permafrost thaws, carbon trapped in the frozen soil is decomposed by microbes and released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and methane, two potent greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWe need accurate, holistic and comprehensive knowledge of how climate changes will affect the amount of carbon the Arctic is taking up and storing, and how much it\u2019s releasing back into the atmosphere, in order to effectively address this crisis,\u201d said Dr Sue Natali, a scientist at the Woodwell Center who contributed to the research. \u201cThis report represents a critical step toward quantifying these emissions at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Human-caused climate change is also intensifying high-latitude <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/wildfires\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wildfires<\/a>, which have increased in burned area, intensity and associated carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Wildfires not only combust vegetation and soil organic matter, releasing carbon into the atmosphere, but they also strip away insulating soil layers, accelerating long-term permafrost thaw and its associated carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cIn recent years, we\u2019ve seen how increasing fire activity from climate change threatens both communities and the carbon stored in permafrost, but now we\u2019re beginning to be able to measure the cumulative impact to the atmosphere, and it\u2019s significant,\u201d said Dr Brendan Rogers, Woodwell Climate scientist and report contributor.<\/p>\n<figure data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.NewsletterSignupBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-11\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"newsletter promotion\" class=\"dcr-av5vqf\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">The planet&#8217;s most important stories. At the same time, Arctic terrestrial ecosystems have remained a consistent source of methane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThe climate catastrophe we\u2019re seeing in the Arctic is already bringing consequences for communities around the world,\u201d said Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThe alarming harbinger of a net carbon source being unleashed sooner rather than later doesn\u2019t bode well.
