The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20241210-charred-remains-of-syrian-ships-after-israeli-strikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said that<\/a> &#8220;Israeli warplanes&#8221; had damaged or sunk about 10 Syrian naval vessels and levelled &#8220;the Barzeh scientific research center&#8221; in the town.<\/p>\n<p>That same facility was hit in 2018 by Western countries, with then-U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-43769332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describing it<\/a> as part of Syria&#8217;s &#8220;chemical weapons infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The wider Latakia region is also home to the Alawite minority religious group to which Assad belongs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I warn here the leaders of the rebels in Syria: Anyone who follows Assad&#8217;s path will end up like Assad,&#8221; Katz said in Haifa. &#8220;We will not allow an extreme Islamic terrorist entity to act against Israel beyond its border, putting its citizens at risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But there were no reports of attacks on the port city of Tartus, some 100 kilometers to the south, where Russia has had a naval presence for five decades (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/russia-assad-putin-tartus-1995406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recently hosting<\/a> three frigates, two auxiliary craft and a Kilo-class diesel-electric attack submarine).
