I can\u2019t say it was a gerrymandered jury,\u201d said Rep. Greg Meeks, the chairman of the Queens Democratic Party. \u201cI\u2019m not sitting there, hearing all the evidence. The jury made a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans hailed the verdict. Moments after Penny was found not guilty for the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man he had held in a fatal chokehold after threatening subway passengers, House Speaker Mike Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerJohnson\/status\/1866181013417656801\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"no-referrer\">called<\/a> the defendant a \u201chero who saved lives.\u201d Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had condemned Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg over his prosecution of Donald Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/1866165414549737485\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"no-referrer\">credited<\/a> the jury \u201cfor doing the right thing,\u201d and incoming Vice President JD Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance\/status\/1866178857633505553\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"no-referrer\">called<\/a> it \u201ca scandal Penny was ever prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the party\u2019s New York-heavy leadership, including House Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, and incoming Congressional Black Congress chair Yvette Clarke, said nothing about the verdict on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Just one New York Democrat criticized it. Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who represents a sliver of the Bronx and lost his 2024 primary after heavy spending by pro-Israel groups, published a 12-post <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JamaalBowmanNY\/status\/1866552073531150636\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"no-referrer\">X thread<\/a> addressed \u201cto white people,\u201d linking Neely\u2019s death to the killings of George Floyd, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, and Breonna Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was sick. He was not a threat. He was subdued. Still not a threat,\u201d wrote Bowman of Neely. \u201cDaniel Penny choked him for 6 minutes. And killed him. We all watched it on camera, and he was still acquitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No other congressional Democrat from New York fully echoed Bowman on Tuesday; conservative X accounts recirculated a May 2023 TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@camiladechalus\/video\/7236381430492826922\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"no-referrer\">interview<\/a> with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, criticizing Penny for not expressing \u201cremorse,\u201d but she did not react to the verdict. Manhattan Rep.
