Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, said that the central bank could be \u201cmore cautious\u201d as it cuts interest rates at a moment when the economy was growing strongly and price increases had been slightly sticky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cGrowth is definitely stronger than we thought, and inflation is coming a little higher,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/04\/business\/dealbook\/jerome-powell-federal-reserve-inflation.html\" title=\"\">Mr. Powell said at The New York Times\u2019s DealBook Summit last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dv1kvn\">\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Powell did not comment directly on whether the Fed would cut rates at the central bank\u2019s Dec. 17-18 meeting. But the Fed chair\u2019s comments underscore the complicated moment facing the central bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The American economy has been growing at a surprisingly strong pace in recent months, fueled by consumers who are now <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/12\/01\/g-s1-36310\/black-friday-cyber-monday-record-spending\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">spending robustly<\/a> heading into the holiday season.
