Trump is inaugurated on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During his last administration, Mr. Trump imposed restrictions on entry to the United States from seven majority-Muslim countries, a policy that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2017\/01\/30\/students-and-scholars-are-stranded-after-trump-bars-travel-nationals-7-countries\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stranded thousands of students<\/a> who were abroad at the time. Later in his term, Mr. Trump added more countries to the restricted travel list. And he has spoken of wanting to reimpose those restrictions once he is back in the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA travel ban is likely to go into effect soon after inauguration,\u201d Cornell\u2019s Office of Global Learning warned students on its website late last month, advising them to be back in the United States before the start of spring-semester classes on Jan. 21. \u201cThe ban is likely to include citizens of the countries targeted in the first Trump administration: Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Myanmar, Sudan, Tanzania, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia. New countries could be added to this list, particularly China and India.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Colleges are also warning all students to prepare for possible delays at the border and in the processing of paperwork.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBudget time ahead of the semester start, prior to the January Martin Luther King holiday,\u201d Harvard <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hio.harvard.edu\/news\/essential-information-winter-travel\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">advised<\/a> on its website for international students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania and Wesleyan University have issued comparable advisories and guidance. The advice is precautionary in nature, since the policies of the new administration remain uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has said that he wanted to bring back or strengthen some of the travel restrictions he imposed in his first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At an event in September with a Republican donor, Miriam Adelson, Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2024-09-20\/donald-trump-vows-to-restore-travel-ban-bar-refugees-from-gaza\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> he would \u201cseal our border and bring back the travel ban,\u201d apparently referring to his restrictions on travel from some majority-Muslim countries. He also said that he would \u201cban refugee resettlement from terror-infested areas like the Gaza Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More than 1.1 million students from outside the United States were enrolled in American colleges and universities in the 2023-24 academic year, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/opendoorsdata.org\/data\/international-students\/enrollment-trends\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Open Doors<\/a>, a data project partially funded by the U.S. State Department.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">India was the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/opendoorsdata.org\/data\/international-students\/leading-places-of-origin\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">most common place of origin<\/a> for international students last year, followed by China; together, they accounted for more than half of all international students in the country.
