And when you\u2019re stoned \u2013 and I\u2019ve been stoned \u2013 you don\u2019t think normally. Legalising marijuana in America and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Canada<\/a> is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">In a 1999 interview with David Frost, John disclosed that his throat problems midway through an Australian tour in the mid-1980s were caused by marijuana, and said he had given up using the drug after advice from doctors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">In Canada, cannabis has been legal for adults, with certain restrictions including on the amount people can possess and distribute, since 2018. Many US states, including California, have also legalised cannabis for medicinal or recreational use, though it remains illegal in others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">John also discussed his \u201cshort fuse\u201d, saying he can snap \u201cif I\u2019m tired, if I\u2019m exhausted, if I\u2019m overwhelmed\u201d. His temper was explored in a 1997 documentary titled Tantrums and Tiaras. But John also credits his ability to create songs quickly to his impatience, saying: \u201cIt\u2019s really effortless.
