It is unclear whether the ships will stay in this location in the near future, or sail to another destination. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since the deepwater port at Tartus was established in 1971, Moscow has maintained a nearly continuous presence there, first for the Soviet Union and then for Russia. It is Russia\u2019s only such port in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among the vessels still docked at Tartus are what appear to be several small Syrian naval ships, despite <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/10\/world\/middleeast\/israel-strikes-syria.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\">claims<\/a> by Israel\u2019s defense ministry that Israeli airstrikes had completely destroyed the Syrian Navy in the port city of Latakia on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No cargo ships have entered or departed from Tartus since at least Monday, according to ship tracking data from MarineTraffic, a commercial ship tracking agency. Two small commercial vessels arrived in the waters outside the port on Monday and Wednesday morning but have not yet docked at the port itself, according to MarineTraffic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other ships are shunning the port entirely. Two Russian vessels that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukrainian-embassy-says-russia-ships-stolen-wheat-syria-2022-06-02\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">regularly<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/exclusive-kyiv-asks-turkey-probe-three-more-russian-ships-it-alleges-transported-2022-07-05\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">transport<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellingcat.com\/news\/2023\/08\/21\/russias-ghost-ships-and-the-evolution-of-a-grain-smuggling-operation\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">grain<\/a> from Russia and Russian-occupied Ukraine to Syria and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/yoruk.bsky.social\/post\/3lcpmmjg3tc2t\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">appeared to be<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/yoruk.bsky.social\/post\/3lc7emgptkk2w\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">en route<\/a> for another delivery to Tartus have altered course in recent days.
