They\u2019re also a measure of Trump\u2019s remarkable comeback from an ostracized former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Jacobs, Time\u2019s editor in chief, announced on NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show that Trump was Time\u2019s 2024 Person of the Year. Jacobs said Trump was someone who \u201cfor better or for worse, had the most influence on the news in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is someone who made an historic comeback, who reshaped the American presidency and who\u2019s reordering American politics,\u201d Jacobs said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to argue with the fact that the person who\u2019s moving into the Oval Office is the most influential person in news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cthere\u2019s always a hot debate\u201d at the magazine over the honor, \u201calthough I have to admit that this year was an easier decision than years past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the magazine published Thursday, Trump spoke about his final campaign blitz and election win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called it \u201872 Days of Fury,\u2019\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe hit the nerve of the country. The country was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump is expected to be on <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/stock-markets\">Wall Street<\/a><\/span> to mark the ceremonial start of the day\u2019s trading, according to four people with knowledge of his plans who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was also Time\u2019s Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House. He was listed as a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7200122\/person-of-the-year-2024-shortlist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finalist for this year\u2019s award<\/a><\/span> alongside notables including Vice President Kamala Harris, X owner Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kate, the Princess of Wales.<\/p>\n<p>The NYSE regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the 9:30 a.m. ceremonial opening trading. Thursday will be Trump\u2019s first time doing the honors, which have become a marker of culture and politics. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, Time CEO Jessica Sibley rang the NYSE opening bell to unveil the magazine\u2019s 2023 Person of the Year: <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/taylor-swift-time-person-of-year-2023-6c8ce1275db4cc326fe6ac94ea20bace\">Taylor Swift<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>During Trump\u2019s first term, his wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell to promote her \u201cBe Best\u201d initiative on children\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump\u2019s trip to New York from his adopted home of Florida to sound the call of capitalism in the mecca of finance tops a string of visits that the former president has made to various spots in the city this year. <\/p>\n<p>Outside of his required presence in a downtown courthouse for his trial, Trump, who is always attuned to the art of a photo op, held campaign events around the city: at a firehouse, a bodega and a construction site. He also held a rally in the Bronx, among the places in the city <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-democratic-states-blue-states-346dbbd11111f9558b69ed137321c630\">where Trump made inroads<\/a><\/span> during the election. <\/p>\n<p>To mark the final stretch of his campaign, he held a high-octane rally at Madison Square Garden, which drew immediate blowback after speakers there made <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-madison-square-garden-new-york-election-fcfe75be7f8281fde7bffa3adb3bba5d\">rude and racist insults and incendiary remarks<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has long had a fascination with being on the cover of Time, where he first made an appearance in 1989. He has falsely claimed to hold the record for cover appearances, and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/a-time-magazine-with-trump-on-the-cover-hangs-in-his-golf-clubs-its-fake\/2017\/06\/27\/0adf96de-5850-11e7-ba90-f5875b7d1876_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post reported in 2017<\/a><\/span> that Trump had a fake picture of himself on the cover of the magazine hanging in several of his golf country clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Trump sat for interviews with the magazine for a story that ran in April. Time\u2019s billionaire owner, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, criticized Trump\u2019s Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, for not granting the magazine an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite multiple requests, Time has not been granted an interview with Kamala Harris\u2014unlike every other Presidential candidate,\u201d Benioff said in a post on X. \u201cWe believe in transparency and publish each interview in full. Why isn\u2019t the Vice President engaging with the public on the same level?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his latest interview published Thursday, Trump reiterated that he\u2019s going to pardon most of those convicted in riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. \u201cIt\u2019s going to start in the first hour,\u201d he said of the pardons. \u201cMaybe the first nine minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump crafted his image as a wealthy real estate developer, which he played up as the star of the TV reality show \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d and during his presidential campaign. He <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-harris-economy-immigration-11db37c033328a7ef6af71fe0a104604\">won the election in part by channeling Americans\u2019 anxieties<\/a><\/span> about the economy\u2019s ability to provide for the middle class. <\/p>\n<p>After the Nov. 5 election, the S&amp;P 500 rallied 2.5% for its best day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,508 points, or 3.6%, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. All three indexes topped records they had set in previous weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who often regards the stock market as a measure of public support, has said his coming term as president should be dated to the day after the election so he is credited for the gains.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign promises have included pledges to deliver historic levels of economic growth, and the people he\u2019s selecting to fill out his incoming administration skew heavily from the business sector. <\/p>\n<p>The larger business community has applauded his promises to reduce corporate taxes and cut regulations. But there are also concerns about his stated plans to impose broad tariffs and possibly target companies that he sees as not aligning with his own political interests.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. stock market has historically tended to rise <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-stocks-volatility-bonds-economy-retirement-59201a39bffd596b253021a6526a4b60\">regardless of which party wins<\/a><\/span> the White House, with Democrats scoring bigger average gains since 1945.
