Military officials were also barred from asking military members their sexual orientation. He deployed to Guantanamo Bay, where he served as an infantry platoon leader, and later served combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, among other awards for his service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw00093b6m93jzr23b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his book, Hegseth wrote he was getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan when the repeal of DADT was put into effect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000a3b6m4p3phsqx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOur commander briefed the unit, peppered with a few jokes,\u201d he wrote. \u201cYou know, infantry stuff. We mostly laughed it off and moved on. America was at war. Gays and lesbians were already serving in the military. I had seen the enemy with my own eyes. We needed everybody.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000b3b6mlvm3y2ky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth says he now regrets that view, \u201cNot because I have a newfound ax to grind with gay Americans,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut because I na\u00efvely believed that\u2019s what ending Don\u2019t Ask Don\u2019t Tell was all about. Once again, our good faith was used against us,\u201d he added. \u201cThe Left never gives an inch, and always takes a mile.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000c3b6m2tegeh5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth has been outspoken about what he calls \u201cwoke\u201d policies that he believes have undermined the US military, including allowing women to serve in combat roles    and transgender members to serve openly. Hegseth writes these changes are the consequence of the \u201csocial justice tinkering\u201d that started with DADT.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000d3b6mgzx9ihsk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking on Fox News in 2015, Hegseth expanded on his criticism, claiming that such policies were an erosion of standards.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000e3b6m05rnh0lx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd what you\u2019re seeing is a military right now that is more interested in social engineering led by this president than they are in war fighting,\u201d he said in comments <a href=\"https:\/\/meidasnews.com\/news\/pete-hegseth-lamented-dont-ask-dont-tell-change-women-in-the-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first reported by Meidas News<\/a>. \u201cSo as a result, through \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u2019 and women in the military and these standards, they\u2019re going to inevitably start to erode standards because they want that one female special operator, that one female Green Beret, that one female Army Ranger, that one female Navy SEAL.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000f3b6mzj96mbw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo they can put them on a recruiting poster and feel good about themselves and has nothing to do with national security,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd these war fighters are realizing they\u2019re just going to start ticking away at the standards until they get one.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000g3b6mxvqdvk8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth in his book does not reference any specific examples of incidents to support his argument that gay individuals openly serving has been detrimental to the military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000h3b6ma9hr13go@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a comment to CNN, a Trump transition spokesperson declined to say what specific policies Hegseth might pursue as secretary of defense, including whether he would reinstate \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d or implement changes to current standards.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000i3b6m8abtv7qm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLike President Trump, Pete wants to see the U.S. military focus on being the world\u2019s strongest fighting force &#8211; not on cultural and social issues. Bottom line: If you can meet the standards, you can serve,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cBut given the threats we face, our priorities shouldn\u2019t be lowering standards and wasting taxpayer money to meet arbitrary social quotas &#8211; our priorities should be readiness and lethality.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000j3b6mtl654g8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In private discussions with senators, Hegseth has also indicated he is not against women serving in combat roles so long as they meet a standard set for all warfighters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000k3b6mq0uepqqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked by CNN Wednesday about his past comments on women in combat roles, Hegseth said he supports \u201call women serving in our military.\u201d He didn\u2019t answer when asked if he thinks getting rid of \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d was a mistake.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000n3b6mcxm0joyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2016, under the Obama administration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/25\/politics\/lloyd-austin-transgender-military-harris-biden\/index.html\">the Pentagon lifted<\/a> the ban on transgender individuals serving openly in the military, allowing them to receive medical care and update their gender identification while serving.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000o3b6mn1bf64lo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The policy was reversed under Trump, with then-Secretary of Defense James Mattis implementing a 2018 policy barring those diagnosed with gender dysphoria from serving, except in limited cases. President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/23\/politics\/transgender-white-house\/index.html\">repealed the<\/a> Trump-era ban in 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000p3b6mwmg6tdmm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ban on women serving in ground combat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/14\/us\/military-women-pete-hegseth-defense-secretary\/index.html\">units was lifted in 2013 and, in 2016<\/a>, all US military combat positions were opened to them. That included infantry, armor, reconnaissance, and some special operations units.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000q3b6mct8iayab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Women account for 17.5% of the Defense Department\u2019s active-duty force, according to 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/3580676\/defense-department-report-shows-decline-in-armed-forces-population-while-percen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the Pentagon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000r3b6mhe4e2n2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2010\/11\/29\/most-continue-to-favor-gays-serving-openly-in-military\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveys<\/a> have shown an increase in the share of Americans who support gay individuals serving openly in the military. In 2010, Pew Research showed 58% in favor, up from 52% in 1994. By 2013, 66% o\ufefff Americans supported allowing women to serve in combat roles, according to Pew Research polls. A <a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2016\/05\/26\/poll-women-in-combat-is-a-popular-idea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll from Morning Consult<\/a> in 2016 found that 74% of registered voters support allowing women to serve in combat roles in the military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000s3b6mj64ymafz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A 2015 RAND Corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_briefs\/RB9955z6.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey found<\/a> that 5.8% of active-duty service members identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and 0.6% identified as transgender, reflecting a similar proportion to the civilian population. Still, <a href=\"https:\/\/dworakpeck.usc.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-10\/McNamara%20Lucas%20Goldbach%20et%20al.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2020 study<\/a> in the journal \u201cSexuality Research and Social Policy\u201d found that 59% of LGBTQ+ service members were uncomfortable being \u201cout.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000t3b6m4rjoww5y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This October, the Pentagon<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/15\/politics\/service-members-dont-ask-dont-tell\/index.html\"> updated more<\/a> than 800 records of service members who were kicked out of the military under the \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d policy to receive honorable discharges. The change now allows service members to access eligible benefits previously denied to them, such as home loans, healthcare and GI Bill tuition assistance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000v3b6m3qnerrg7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an episode of \u201cthe Ben Shapiro Show\u201d this summer, Hegseth claimed that \u201ca lot of people\u201d who initially supported the repeal of \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d now regret their involvement in the policy change, citing one example of an anonymous gay soldier who says he now regrets supporting the repeal of DADT because it opened the door to a \u201ctrans agenda\u201d in the military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kk15di000c3b6mxj4nypjg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking on \u201cthe Ben Shapiro Show\u201d<em> <\/em>in June, Hegseth criticized a military ad campaign featuring a soldier with two lesbian mothers, calling it emblematic of a larger shift toward individualism in military culture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000w3b6mgpc3ue96@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt started with Clinton under \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cTrying to change that policy. At first it was camouflaged nicely and now they\u2019re just, they\u2019re just open about it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw000z3b6mghsyk1rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In another interview in November on a podcast, Hegseth again argued \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d was the beginning of the \u201ctinkering\u201d of the military for social justice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw00103b6m7i58n7mg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo it started, you know, we saw it under Clinton with the tinkering of \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u2019 and the reasons for those changes,\u201d Hegseth said on a podcast promoting his book. \u201cAnd I talked to some of the people involved in when that was changed, but it really happened, started to accelerate under Obama.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw00113b6mnbtqgqky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At another event in 2016, Hegseth cited \u201cwomen in combat\u201d and the repeal of DADT as policies pushed by \u201cpolitical house cats\u201d in the military favored by the Obama administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4kgc5lw00123b6m8jv5jxy8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was stuff like, \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell,\u2019 which was their immediate target, right? Right out the gate,\u201d Hegseth said. \u201cWe need to change that and \u2013 say what you want about what about that, people are passionate on that issue.
