Earlier this year, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-describes-presidency-new-book-rcna168910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publicly threatened Zuckerberg<\/a> with \u201clife in prison\u201d if he did anything Trump viewed as illegal during this year\u2019s presidential election campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The two men <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/facebook-trump-zuckerberg-meta-03b409b31deb17ecf3c6d8913e999550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had dinner together<\/a> last month at Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Zuckerberg declined during the campaign to endorse either Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris, although he did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/mark-zuckerberg-praises-trumps-response-assassination-attempt-rcna162777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praise Trump\u2019s response<\/a> to an assassination attempt in July, calling his raised fist after the shooting \u201cone of the most badass things I\u2019ve ever seen in my life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The company\u2019s relationship with Trump and other politicians has long been complicated because of how many people get their news from Meta\u2019s apps. Trump\u2019s successful 2016 campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-facebooks-embed-in-the-trump-campaign-helped-the-president-win-11574521712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credited Facebook<\/a> with helping to reach voters with digital advertising. In 2021, Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/facebook-suspends-trump-s-accounts-2-years-citing-public-safety-n1269660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended Trump\u2019s Facebook and Instagram accounts<\/a>, as did some other platforms like Twitter, after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump\u2019s accounts have since been restored. But in recent years, the company has said it is trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/10\/technology\/facebook-reduces-politics-feeds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce the amount of politics<\/a> in people\u2019s feeds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Over the next four years, Trump\u2019s administration will determine federal policy in a wide variety of areas that are important to Meta and other tech companies, including regulation of artificial intelligence and antitrust enforcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">At the tail end of Trump\u2019s first term, in December 2020, the Federal Trade Commission sued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/u-s-government-calls-breakup-facebook-n1250588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">try to break up Meta<\/a>, then known as Facebook. The vote was 3-2, with then-Chairman Joseph Simons, a Trump appointee, joining two Democratic appointees in approving the lawsuit. The case is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/18735353\/federal-trade-commission-v-meta-platforms-inc\/?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still pending<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmark\">One Meta board member, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, told the Free Press website this week that he has spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/marc-andreessen-on-ai-tech-censorship-trump-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about half his time<\/a> since the Nov. 5 election at Mar-a-Lago helping with the transition.
