The changes create a rolling wave that oscillates back and forth across the lake, which could last for hours or even days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-video video-ct\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p class=\"sub-text\">Weather watchers observed this seiche, a large standing wave, during Thursday&#8217;s lake-effect snow storm on Lake Erie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/lake-effect-snow-whiteout-erie-hamburg-i90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WATCH: LAKE-EFFECT SNOWS BRING WHITEOUT CONDITIONS ALONG I-90 CORRIDOR ALONG LAKE ERIE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The screaming westerly winds, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/lake-effect-snowstorm-great-lakes-new-york-pennsylvania-michigan\">third lake-effect snowstorm since the end of November<\/a>, were strong enough to cause a large drop in Toledo, Ohio&#8217;s water levels on the west side of Lake Erie as the winds blew a surge of water east to the other side of the lake toward Buffalo. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">On Thursday, NOAA water gauges showed water levels were down in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\/toledo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toledo<\/a> by about 5 feet and up by 10 feet in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/buffalo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffalo<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Seiche.png\"\/><fig-caption>Water levels in Toledo and Buffalo from the seiche event.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/fig-caption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Video taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StormsOnErie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Storm Watch Lake Erie<\/a>, taken from Ontario, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a> looking toward Buffalo, shows the large, standing wave moving across the lake. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to NOAA, Lake Erie is known for seiches created by strong southwest winds.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">These wave events are generally not hazardous but can be. In 1844, a 22-foot wave part of a seiche event breached a 14-foot sea wall and killed 78 people.
