Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s office began presenting evidence to a grand jury in an effort to secure an indictment against Mangione, though the DA declined to comment to Forbes when asked if grand jury proceedings had begun.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"key-facts-element\">\n<p>Reports that a grand jury has been gathered in the case come after days of new developments: On Wednesday, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference the gun found on the suspect matched the shell casings that were found at the scene of Thompson\u2019s death (police have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lindseychoo\/2024\/12\/10\/what-to-know-ghost-guns-unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lindseychoo\/2024\/12\/10\/what-to-know-ghost-guns-unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting\/\" to those found on a water bottle and protein bar wrapper found near the crime scene\u2014echoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/11\/us\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-shooter-wednesday\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" Mangione with both a handwritten \u201cmanifesto\u201d and a notebook with plans for the shooting, the New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/11\/nyregion\/luigi-mangione-assassination-plan-notebook.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/11\/nyregion\/luigi-mangione-assassination-plan-notebook.html\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/11\/nyregion\/luigi-mangione-assassination-plan-notebook.html\" aria-label=\"reported\">reported<\/a>, citing unnamed individuals\u2014it reportedly described a plan to \u201cwack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention\u201d in a \u201ctargeted, precise\u201d attack that \u201cdoesn\u2019t risk innocents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"key-facts-element\">\n<p>CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/11\/us\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-shooter-wednesday\/index.html\" notebook, which it said contained a to-do list and a rationale for his alleged plans, citing an unnamed police source.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"key-facts-element\">\n<p>When entering his extradition hearing Tuesday\u2014at which he was denied bail a second time and indicated he will contest his extradition to New York\u2014 Mangione was heard shouting: \u201cIt\u2019s completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"key-facts-element\">\n<p>Mangione\u2019s lawyer, Thomas Dickey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/12\/us\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting-suspect-thursday-hnk\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" the outburst because he was \u201cirritated, agitated about what\u2019s happening to him and what he\u2019s being accused of,\u201d and he said Mangione had not had legal representation at that point, adding: \u201cNow he has a spokesperson and someone that\u2019s going to fight for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"key-facts-element\">\n<p>An arrest warrant against Mangione filed in New York and unsealed Tuesday alleges he presented the same false identification to Pennsylvania officers that was given to a hostel he reportedly stayed in in New York City, and was found with \u201cwritten admissions about the crime,\u201d though no further details are given in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/documents\/4a53dc9f-2a8d-4686-bcb0-22412c8a70e2.pdf?itid=lk_inline_manual_12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" an internal NYPD report that walked through a \u201cmanifesto\u201d found on Mangione when he was arrested, and noted Mangione \u201cappeared to view the targeted killing of the company\u2019s highest-ranking representative as a symbolic takedown and a direct challenge to its alleged corruption and \u2018power games,\u2019 asserting in his note he is the \u2018first to face it with such He was shot from behind just before 7 a.m. on Dec. 4 outside of the New York Hilton Midtown\u2014where the meeting was being held\u2014and was hit in the back and right calf, after which the suspect fled the area on foot and on an electric bike. A Minnesota resident, Thompson had served as chief executive since April 2021 and had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004. Prior to Mangione\u2019s arrest, police said they believed the shooting was \u201ca brazen targeted attack\u201d and searched New York City before saying they believed the suspect had left the city on a bus. Thompson\u2019s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News \u201cthere had been some threats,\u201d but didn\u2019t provide details on what the threats were. Thompson had two sons, one who just graduated from high school and one still in high school. Police had been searching for the gunman by utilizing diving teams in Central Park, flying helicopters, searching through security cameras in the area, maintaining drones and using dogs.
