FOX Weather Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen breaks down the latest from the report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">For months, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a> has heard about the possibility of entering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/la-nina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Ni\u00f1a<\/a> phase, with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate<\/a> models even predicting it would occur during the previous spring. Despite these outlooks, water temperatures in parts of the Pacific have not reached the threshold required for La Ni\u00f1a, even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/atmosphere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atmospheric<\/a> conditions are showing characteristics typical of the pattern.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">So, what\u2019s going on? Why are parts of the world experiencing La Ni\u00f1a-related events without an official La Ni\u00f1a in place? There is evidence for all sorts of outcomes, whether it is more El Ni\u00f1os, stronger overall events, or even a decrease in the number of El Ni\u00f1os or La Ni\u00f1as. This uncertainty is because ENSO is a complicated give-and-take between the atmosphere and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ocean<\/a> with a lot of different tuning knobs that each get adjusted by climate change,&#8221; Tom Di Liberto, a NOAA meteorologist and climate guru, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/changes-enso-impacts-warming-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote in a previous ENSO blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/la-nada-neutral-enso-pacific-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>LITTLE-KNOWN WEATHER PATTERN WHEN EL NINO AND LA NINA ARE NO LONGER IN CONTROL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">So, while the agency does expect the world to enter a weak La Ni\u00f1a in early 2025, the weather patterns are expected to change as the signal for the event is not strong.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In fact, the agency believes the ENSO will find itself back in neutral territory by the spring and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summer<\/a> of 2025 and continue in neutral status through much of the year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image component-center\">\n<div class=\"m\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/288\/162\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1, https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/576\/324\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1 2x\" width=\"576\" height=\"324\"><source media=\"(min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 1023px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/720\/405\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1, https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/1440\/810\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1 2x\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/668\/376\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1, https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/1336\/752\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1 2x\" width=\"1336\" height=\"752\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/668\/376\/model-predictions-of-ens-9.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"ENSO Model Prediction\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p class=\"title\">ENSO Model Prediction<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"><strong> (The International Research Institute for Climate and Society, Columbia University Climate School \/ FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The neutral state of the ENSO occurs when water temperature anomalies in the eastern and central Pacific are between 0.5 degrees Celsius and -0.5 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Typically, there are fewer kinks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-the-jet-stream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jet stream<\/a>, meaning more regional patterns dominate local weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">ENSO-neutral conditions are not known to produce historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter<\/a> seasons or busy spring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/severe-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">severe weather<\/a> outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Every neutral summer in the past two decades has been accompanied by above-average temperatures, but again, it is unclear whether this is directly triggered by the ENSO or the continuation of the changing climate.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/el-nino-la-nina-climate-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHAT ARE EL NINO AND LA NINA CLIMATE PATTERNS?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;This is very much a developing story \u2013 you\u2019re reading about scientific development and discovery in real time. Our official ENSO metrics may not describe ENSO quite as well in the context of the much-above-average global ocean temperatures we\u2019ve seen over the past year, but we don\u2019t know yet if the relative Ni\u00f1o-3.4 Index is going to\u00a0consistently\u00a0describe ENSO better into the future.
