Szostak, a Nobel-prize-winning chemist at the University of Chicago who helped write <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.25740\/cv716pj4036\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a 299-page technical report<\/a> on the risks of the research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an accompanying <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.ads9158\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">commentary<\/a> in the journal Science, Dr. Szostak and his colleagues warned that an organism created with the new technology could cause \u201cextraordinarily damaging consequences for the environment, agriculture, and human well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To make such a microbe, scientists would have to build a cell that defied one of the fundamental properties of life on Earth. The molecules that serve as the building blocks of DNA and proteins typically exist in one of two mirror-image forms. But living cells rely on just one form.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Our DNA, for example, has a backbone made partly of sugar. While sugar molecules can exist in left- and right-handed forms, DNA only uses the right-handed molecules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s the reason DNA\u2019s double helix has a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sandwalk.blogspot.com\/2015\/03\/on-handedness-of-dna.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">right-handed twist<\/a>. Our proteins, by contrast, are made of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/science-research\/planetary-science\/astrobiology\/nasa-mystery-of-lifes-handedness-deepens\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">left-handed amino acids<\/a>.
