Since then, they\u2019ve acted opposite one another a few times: Preston made a guest appearance on \u201cLost,\u201d playing the mother of Emerson\u2019s character in a flashback and she also recurred as his fianc\u00e9e on \u201cPerson of Interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut Emerson\u2019s arrival as a recurring guest star on Preston\u2019s CBS show \u201cElsbeth\u201d marks the first time the married couple play enemies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cListen, I don\u2019t see him in my marriage,\u201d Preston says, referring to the long hours required to play the title character of a procedural, as she and Emerson log on to Zoom with <em>Variety<\/em> from their home in New York City. \u201cI had to get a part on the show just to see my own wife,\u201d Emerson cracks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the episode, titled \u201cOne Angry Woman,\u201d Elsbeth gets summoned to jury duty (an obligation that means she\u2019s finally a true New Yorker) and she lands on the jury of a murder trial presided over by an unusually difficult judge. Emerson plays the bespectacled Judge Milton Crawford whose haughty demeanor hides a much darker secret \u2014 that he\u2019s committed the murder in question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNaturally, Elsbeth is quick to sniff out Judge Crawford\u2019s strange behavior, but she can\u2019t put her finger on exactly what is off, setting up a contentious situation between the two as the trial progresses. By the end of the episode, it\u2019s clear that this was only Round 1 for Elsbeth and Judge Crawford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLet\u2019s think of him as the Moriarty to Elsbeth\u2019s Sherlock,\u201d Preston teases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRead on as Preston and Emerson discuss their on-set dynamic \u2014 and as they pitch a few ideas for working together again.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tIt\u2019s so fun to watch the two of y\u2019all verbally spar. But I\u2019m very nervous for Elsbeth, because this man is a cold, hard killer.\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>CARRIE PRESTON: <\/strong>You should be nervous for her. This man is a cold-hearted killer who\u2019s also extremely powerful.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tTell me how this all came together \u2014 because Carrie\u2019s guest appearance on \u201cLost\u201d began as an inside joke and you\u2019ve both worked with Robert and Michelle King. How did the \u201cElsbeth\u201d pairing come to be?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON:<\/strong> Since the show started airing, people have been asking, \u201cWho would be your ideal guest star? Who would you like on the show?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, wouldn\u2019t it be fun if my husband could be on the show?\u201d It wasn\u2019t like it was my idea \u2014 anyone would be lucky to have Michael come on their show \u2014 it was all about Jonathan Tolins, our showrunner, and Robert and Michelle King, the creators, to find the right role for him. And I think they found it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>MICHAEL EMERSON:<\/strong> Because at the end of the day, we are both members in good standing of the Robert and Michelle King Repertory Players, so if something comes up and we\u2019re right for it, they\u2019ll plug us in. Carrie kept saying, \u201cBrace yourself, because there\u2019s going to be a phone call here somewhere along the line.\u201d I felt like, \u201cBring it on. That\u2019s going to be fun.\u201d They won\u2019t bring me in if it\u2019s not something pretty choice, and it turned out that it was.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tMichael, what did you make of Judge Crawford? Because this character is a different kind of dastardly than <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/evil-series-finale-creators-the-kings-on-the-ending-1236114296\/\">Leland on \u201cEvil.\u201d<\/a>\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>When you are on a series for a long time, you forget what it\u2019s like on day one of something new. Where you have not established a character yet and you\u2019re having to come up with it. You\u2019re having to make something three-dimensional in a hurry, so it was tough the first day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe first day I shot was the murder, and I\u2019m just a guy with a baseball bat. I hadn\u2019t really settled on all the different angles of his character. They came eventually, as we went along. It makes you realize how nice it is if you\u2019re on a series for a long time \u2014 you really don\u2019t think much about coming up with a character. You have been doing it. You just put the clothes on, and you\u2019re it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>The guest stars pretty much always start with the murder, because that\u2019s the only thing that I\u2019m not in. Generally, I\u2019m on another unit finishing up the previous episode, so we\u2019ll have two crews filming at once, so the bad guys often come in and immediately commit a murder. It gets you right into it!<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tIs this the first time y\u2019all have played characters that are foils to one another?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve been antagonistic to one another. We\u2019ve always had scenes of warmth and love \u2014 not like enemies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>We haven\u2019t gone against each other in that way. He plays a lot of evil characters and a lot of dark characters, and I play a lot of light-hearted ones, and to see both of those energies go head-to-head, it was really fun. It was truly, like good and evil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>It\u2019s like a collision of universes.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tWhat\u2019s interesting about these characters is they respect each other\u2019s intellect, but they\u2019re opposing forces. What\u2019s that been like to play?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>Michael and I don\u2019t rehearse together. We don\u2019t even talk about the scenes at home. I don\u2019t know what that says about us, but I guess I implicitly trust him. I also like the element of spontaneity that comes with not knowing what the other actor is going to do. Come in knowing my role, having an idea of where I want to go with it, but it\u2019s more like playing jazz than anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWe found a very easy rhythm playing these scenes, mostly because we have such a trust for each other, and the scenes were incredibly well written. If it\u2019s not on the page, it\u2019s not on the stage. We had great writing to work with, and then we just tweaked it. We had a wonderful director who helped us find little nuances, and we just ran with it.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tWhat was the first scene you had together?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>We did the courtroom first. It\u2019s quiet, but the subtext is very dangerous. A lot of messages are being sent that are off text.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>And we played it several different ways, so they could turn the dial up, or they could turn the dial down in the edit, depending on how they wanted the storyline to play out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>We haven\u2019t seen it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>They don\u2019t show me shows until it airs, so I see it with the audience. So I\u2019ll be curious to see. I can\u2019t wait to see how it cuts together. Because it\u2019s one thing to play it in the room \u2014 that\u2019s when all possibilities are infinite, and then when we see it on TV, it has become the definitive. I sometimes don\u2019t even want to watch it, because I know what we did, and I know what it could be in my mind. But there were so many different ways that we did it that were equally interesting; we gave them some good choices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>I\u2019ll be curious to see it. I can\u2019t wait to see it!<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tMichael, what was it like watching Carrie work?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>I\u2019m a fan of Elsbeth, but when you\u2019re on set, you get to see Elsbeth just before they say \u201cAction,\u201d and just after they say \u201cCut\u201d again. I get to watch her do that thing, and then go into it and then come back out of it, it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt makes the acting a little tricky, only because I don\u2019t have a neutral character in front of me. I have the person I woke up with that morning, so I have to spend some mental energy erasing her from my memory and making her be someone I\u2019ve never met before.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tWhat did you observe about her before \u201cAction\u201d and after \u201cCut\u201d?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>I observed her relaxation. How it\u2019s just so there for her. It doesn\u2019t require a lot of deep breathing or pinching herself or anything like that. When they say action, she\u2019s full-on Elsbeth right there, seemingly without any effort at all.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tCarrie, you\u2019ve played this character for so long \u2014 14 years with \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d and  then \u201cThe Good Fight.\u201d But this is a new iteration of her and a new tempo, being the center of the action. How much have you relished this version of Elsbeth?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>This moment is not lost on me in my life or in my career. I\u2019ve been doing this for a long time. When you\u2019re younger and you\u2019re first starting out, you think, \u201cOh, wow, it\u2019d be great to have a show that\u2019s centered around my character,\u201d but there\u2019s never that expectation that that\u2019s going to happen. Because it doesn\u2019t happen to very many people at all. I\u2019ve had an incredibly fortuitous career. I feel blessed with the career that I\u2019ve had, so, the fact that this is coming now, because of all the years that I put into the work, I appreciate it more<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI\u2019ve also never worked so hard before \u2014 because the hours are challenging. It takes a lot of hours to make this 43 minutes that you\u2019re watching. And when you\u2019re called Elsbeth, you\u2019re there a lot and that can be a little challenging on the stamina. But whenever I find myself lagging in any way energy-wise, I just remind myself that this is an incredibly rare thing. It\u2019s a gift. I just turn to somebody on the set and tell them how great they are. What comes next?\t<\/h5>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>He\u2019s somebody that is not going to be easy to catch because of his reach and his power and his influence. But I don\u2019t think he quite understands the tenacity of Elsbeth Tasioni either. He is only starting to realize that she\u2019s not all that she appears to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>The judge is going to go to work to try to undermine her in a number of ways. We get little glimpses of him in three more episodes scattered, and then there will be another big episode where they\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>Is it three more?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>Yeah, I have a total of five.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>See, I don\u2019t even know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>EMERSON: <\/strong>She\u2019s on a need-to-know basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>PRESTON: <\/strong>Listen, I\u2019m one episode at a time.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-secondary-m   \">\n\t\tDo you have any future aspirations of working together or creating something together?
