It\u2019s a sentiment shared by a growing number of parents, who are choosing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/policy-watch\/childhood-vaccination-rates-continue-to-decline-as-trump-heads-for-a-second-term\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">to skip recommended shots for their children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But while everyone seems to be talking about the potential side effects of vaccines, few are discussing the diseases they prevent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It has been half a century or more since many of the inoculations became routine in the United States, and the experience of having these illnesses has been largely erased from public memory. Questions today about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4869767\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the risk-benefit ratio of vaccines<\/a> might just be a product of the vaccines\u2019 own success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is what people should know about six once-common illnesses that vaccines have contained for decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4e19b89d\">Measles<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Measles, a viral infection often spread by a cough or sneeze, is extraordinarily contagious: Nine out of 10 people around an infected person will catch measles if they have not been vaccinated. Measles can be contracted in a room up to two hours after a person with the disease has left it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Measles is not a mild illness, particularly for children under 5. It can cause a high fever, coughing, conjunctivitis and rashes, and if it leads to pneumonia or encephalitis \u2014 brain swelling \u2014 it can quickly become lethal. Before the vaccine was licensed in the United States in 1963, almost every child had contracted measles by age 15.
