Detainees could be held in these cells for<br \/>\nmonths while being interrogated and tortured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They<br \/>\nare just below street-level, on a busy road where every day thousands of<br \/>\nordinary Syrians passed by, going about their daily lives just a few metres<br \/>\nfrom where their compatriots were being detained and tortured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A<br \/>\nshort distance away is the General Intelligence Directorate, another part of<br \/>\nSyria\u2019s former network of spy agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Here there are a huge numbers of records &#8211; evidence of how the Assad regime used to monitor<br \/>\nits citizens. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There<br \/>\nis row after row of paper files in cabinets and, in some rooms, piles of<br \/>\nnotebooks stacked from floor to ceiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nearby<br \/>\nis a computer server room.
