Mexican officials do not typically reveal the full names of crime victims in order not to obstruct investigations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prosecutors said the man had been born in the United States and the woman was a naturalized American born in Mexico. Ms. Guzm\u00e1n said there was no immediate information about why the couple had been targeted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The authorities learned of the attack after security officers found the couple\u2019s bullet-ridden vehicle on a street in Angamacutiro. Inside was the body of the woman, who died at the scene, officials said. The man, found alive but gravely wounded, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died early Thursday, Ms. Guzm\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokesman with the United States Embassy in Mexico said officials were \u201caware of the situation\u201d and tracking it closely. The State Department said in a statement: \u201cWe are aware of reports of the death of two U.S. citizens in Michoac\u00e1n, Mexico.
