Discovery opted not to renew the <em>Sesame <\/em>output deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/hbo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hbo_1\" data-tag=\"hbo\">HBO<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/max\/\" id=\"auto-tag_max_1\" data-tag=\"max\">Max<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat being said, Max is staying in business with the show\u2019s producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sesame-workshop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sesame-workshop_1\" data-tag=\"sesame-workshop\">Sesame Workshop<\/a>, with the streaming service continuing to license episodes from the <em>Sesame <\/em>library through 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe decision not to continue the deal for new episodes stems from a change in strategy, with Max pivoting to focus more on adult and family programming, and placing less emphasis on kids fare like <em>Sesame<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt has been a wonderful, creative experience working with everyone at <em>Sesame Street<\/em>\u00a0on the iconic children\u2019s series\u00a0and we are thrilled to be able to keep some of the library series on Max in the U.S.,\u201d a spokesperson for Max tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cAs we\u2019ve launched Max though and based on consumer usage and feedback, we\u2019ve had to prioritize our focus on stories for adults and families, and so new episodes from <em>Sesame Street<\/em>, at this time, are not as core to our strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe are excited to extend our 10-year partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, keeping\u00a0<em>Sesame Street<\/em>\u2019s iconic library available on Max through 2027,\u201d a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop says.\u00a0\u201cWe will continue to invest in our best-in-class programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that\u00a0<em>Sesame Street<\/em>\u00a0reaches as many children as possible for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Sesame Street<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/hbo-sesame-street-enter-five-815157\/\">had been<\/a> on HBO since 2016 (episodes also air on PBS a few months after they run on HBO, allowing for maximum reach and accessibility, as alluded to by the Sesame spokesperson), with the companies last striking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/sesame-street-moving-hbo-max-5-year-deal-1245138\/\">five-year deal<\/a> in 2019 that moved the show to HBO Max and Max.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe show could draw substantial attention from a number of major players, not only because of the marquee name, but also because of its library of episodes, which span more than five decades. Max had pulled hundreds of older episodes two years ago as part of cost-saving measures at the company. It is not clear whether the library deal with Max would prohibit potential partners for new episodes from acquiring the library episodes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tStreaming services like Netflix, Apple TV+ or Prime Video could be eager to beef up their services with arguably the best-known children\u2019s show of all time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tExecutives at Sesame Workshop, cognizant of the end of the contract and seeking to keep the program fresh, are embarking on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/sesame-street-changing-format-tales-from-123-season-56-1235623888\/\"> an effort to \u201creimagine\u201d the show<\/a> for season 56 next year, the first season that will run under whatever new deal the organization is able to secure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Sesame Street<\/em> will get a new look, dropping the \u201cmagazine\u201d-style format it has had for years, and leaning into longer narrative-led segments, paired with a new animated series <em>Tales From 123<\/em>. The changes will be the most significant since 2016, when the show went from one hour to 30 minutes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s going to give us an opportunity to dive further into the narrative,\u201d Kay Wilson Stallings, the executive vp and chief creative development and production officer for Sesame Workshop told <em>THR <\/em>at the time, calling the changes a \u201creimagining\u201d of the show, and adding that the longer segments will allow for more \u201cdynamic\u201d and \u201csophisticated\u201d stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe program, with its iconic Muppet characters like Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird, first debuted in 1969, and have run on PBS since 1970.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSesame Workshop also has a new CEO, with Sherrie Westin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/sesame-workshop-new-ceo-sherrie-westin-1235934833\/\">assuming leadership<\/a> of the non-profit earlier this year. Westin, a longtime veteran of Sesame Workshop, is only the second female CEO in the organization\u2019s history, following\u00a0<em>Sesame Street\u00a0<\/em>creator Joan Ganz Cooney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMax, meanwhile, is pulling back on kids programming to focus on its core adult content as well as family fare like the upcoming <em>Harry Potter<\/em> series.
