They sit on the shores of General Carrera Lake, a glacial lake in southern Chile. The lake floods the caverns with turquoise waters, which fill the caves with blue light and give them an ethereal appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The Marble Caves are so smooth, they look like they&#8217;ve been hollowed out with an ice cream scoop. But the caves formed due to the slow action of lake water, which dissolved minerals in the rocks until the walls crumbled. Researchers think this occurred over the past 10,000 to 15,000 years, after glaciers retreated from the region and exposed its stone to weathering.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/geology\/cave-of-crystals-the-deadly-cavern-in-mexico-dubbed-the-sistine-chapel-of-crystals\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/geology\/cave-of-crystals-the-deadly-cavern-in-mexico-dubbed-the-sistine-chapel-of-crystals\"><u><strong>Cave of Crystals: The deadly cavern in Mexico dubbed &#8216;the Sistine Chapel of crystals&#8217;<\/strong><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After the glaciers retreated, the lake was created, and that was when the process of sculpting the [caves] began,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geolsoc.org.uk\/About\/Honorary-Fellows\/List-of-Honorary-Fellows\/Prof-Francisco-Herve\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.geolsoc.org.uk\/About\/Honorary-Fellows\/List-of-Honorary-Fellows\/Prof-Francisco-Herve\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Francisco Herv\u00e9 Allamand<\/u><\/a>, a professor of geology at Andr\u00e9s Bello National University in Chile and an honorary fellow of the Geological Society of America, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/article\/20190326-south-americas-stunning-marble-cathedral\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/article\/20190326-south-americas-stunning-marble-cathedral\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>told the BBC<\/u><\/a> in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The stone in the caves was originally limestone, a sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate. But it transformed into marble, which is a metamorphic rock, under high heat and pressure before the caverns opened, Herv\u00e9 Allamand said. Limestones are some of the most soluble rocks in the world, he said, meaning they are extremely susceptible to erosion from water.<\/p>\n<p>The original limestone formed closer to the equator than Chile sits today and drifted southward millions of years ago as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/37706-what-is-plate-tectonics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/37706-what-is-plate-tectonics.html\"><u>tectonic plates<\/u><\/a> shifted around Earth, Herv\u00e9 Allamand said. This grinding journey jumbled up Earth&#8217;s crust and buried rocks so deep that they became exposed to blistering temperatures of 570 to 750 degrees Fahrenheit (300 to 400 degrees Celsius).
