The debate over <em>T. Rex&#8217;s<\/em> smarts continues, with a recent paper leaning toward the original theory that these fearsome giants weren&#8217;t all that bright.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/t-rex-was-a-lot-brainier-than-we-thought-researcher-claims\">controversial 2023 study<\/a> suggested one of the world&#8217;s most infamous  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dinosaurs\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73069\" data-postid=\"146883\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dinosaurs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tyrannosaurus\"><em>Tyrannosaurus rex<\/em><\/a>, could be as brainy as modern monkeys, provoking much skepticism from other researchers who&#8217;ve now brought their receipts to the table.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The possibility that <em>T. rex<\/em> might have been as intelligent as a baboon is fascinating and terrifying, with the potential to reinvent our view of the past,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2024\/april\/t-rex-not-as-smart.html\">explained<\/a> University of Southampton paleontologist Darren Naish when the new results were published in April.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But our study shows how all the data we have is against this idea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Led by zoologist Kai Caspar from <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.45px;\">Heinrich Heine University in Germany<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\">, the researchers found that the brain size measurements in the 2023 study were inaccurate, inflating estimates on the number of neurons the prehistoric reptiles could fit in their noggin, particularly in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forebrain\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\">forebrain<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This overestimation was primarily due to the original paper assuming <em>T. rex&#8217;s<\/em> brain filled up most of the endocranial space, which isn&#8217;t true in most dinosaurs, Naish <a href=\"https:\/\/tetzoo.com\/blog\/2024\/4\/22\/t-rex-the-tool-maker\">explained in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125465\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/04\/DinosaurIntelligenceComparedToOtherAnimalsGraph.jpg\" alt=\"Graph plotting relationship between brain and body mass of birds, mammals, reptiles and dinosaurs\" width=\"700\" height=\"483\" class=\"wp-image-125465 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/04\/DinosaurIntelligenceComparedToOtherAnimalsGraph.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/04\/DinosaurIntelligenceComparedToOtherAnimalsGraph-642x443.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/04\/DinosaurIntelligenceComparedToOtherAnimalsGraph-601x415.jpg 601w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/04\/DinosaurIntelligenceComparedToOtherAnimalsGraph-600x414.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Relationship between brain and body mass in land-living vertebrates. (Gutierrez-Ibanez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, Caspar and colleagues argue that neuron counts do not reliably track with intelligence.
