Here\u2019s how that works.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-979426\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ios-18-2-brings-expanded-default-categories-and-new-settings-hub\">iOS 18.2 brings expanded default categories and new Settings hub<\/h2>\n<p>The iPhone for years has offered some options for setting new default apps. Here\u2019s how Apple describes it:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Manage which apps your iPhone will use automatically for sending emails, browsing the web, and more<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For example, when you tap a link to an email, phone number, or a standard URL, your default app will be used. Normally, Apple\u2019s own apps act as defaults (e.g., Mail, Messages, Safari, Wallet, etc.), but you can change those defaults.<\/p>\n<p>Here are all the options, plus a description of what changing the default means:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Email<\/strong>: This app will be used to compose new emails.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Messaging<\/strong>: This app will be used to compose new messages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calling<\/strong>: This app will be used to make calls.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Call Filtering<\/strong>: This app will be used for call filtering and identification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Browser App<\/strong>: This app will be used to open links and browse the web.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Passwords &amp; Codes<\/strong>: These apps (multiple can be selected at once) will be used for AutoFill, and you can choose a separate app for setting up verification and QR codes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contactless App<\/strong>: This app will be automatically selected when using NFC with contactless readers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keyboards<\/strong>: These keyboards will be available from the keyboard switcher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note, your listed categories might differ based on your location and Apple\u2019s various global policies. If you\u2019re in the US, the eight categories above will be available. If you\u2019re in the EU, for example, you might <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2024\/08\/22\/default-app-controls-ios-18-iphone-eu\/\">see more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have third-party apps installed in a given category, you won\u2019t see anything there except Apple\u2019s own apps. But going to the App Store and downloading alternatives will cause them to appear inside the Default Apps section as new options.<\/p>\n<p>Several of these options existed before, but were siloed into different parts of Settings that weren\u2019t the easiest to find.
