Amazon didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment, but it is reportedly planning to donate the same amount  to Trump\u2019s inaugural fund.<\/p>\n<p>While <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/09\/us\/politics\/technology-companies-biden-inaugural-donors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>tech companies<\/u><\/a> have given to previous presidential inaugurations, the donations come as Trump and Republicans look at reshaping policies that impact social media, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence and more. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has criticized Big Tech in the past, accusing some of the world\u2019s largest online platforms such as Meta and Google of censoring conservative speech. The platforms have long denied these allegations, but the tech industry\u2019s  relationship with Republicans became increasingly fraught after social media companies temporarily suspended <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/tptjiljq-ha-123\" data-autoplayable-video=\"true\">Trump\u2019s accounts<\/a> following the Jan. 6, 2001, attack on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>During Trump\u2019s first presidency, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/technology\/la-fi-tn-silicon-valley-immigration-20170128-story.html\">tech executives,<\/a> including from Google, Facebook and Apple, clashed with his administration for banning immigrants from certain Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign, backed by Tesla and SpaceX Chief Executive <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2020-12-08\/elon-musk-moves-to-texas-criticizing-california\">Elon Musk<\/a>, and other major tech companies didn\u2019t respond to  requests for Trump will lead our country into the age of AI\u201d and Altman was \u201ceager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Federal and state lawmakers, including in California, have been trying to place  guardrails around the development of artificial intelligence. While AI-powered tools can make it easier for people to sift through large amounts of information, the technology\u2019s rapid development has also raised concerns about national security, disinformation and job losses.<\/p>\n<p>But as tech companies face stiff competition, including from China, they\u2019re also worried that regulation could slow them down.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has said he plans to reverse  President Biden\u2019s 2023 <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-06-20\/president-joe-biden-ai-artificial-intelligence-san-francisco\">executive order on AI<\/a>, which aimed to address some of the safety concerns surrounding AI, and analysts anticipate Trump could make a big push for AI innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Altman has also sparred with Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump who spent at least $200 million to back the former president\u2019s 2024 campaign and is looking at ways to slash government spending, over AI safety concerns. Musk, an early investor in OpenAI who also runs rival AI startup XAI, has accused the company of putting profits and commercial interests ahead of the public good. OpenAI, controlled by a nonprofit board, is reportedly trying to restructure as a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-remove-non-profit-control-give-sam-altman-equity-sources-say-2024-09-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>for-profit benefit<\/u><\/a> corporation.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nytimes\/videos\/sam-altman-downplays-the-dangers-of-ai-and-musk\/1095425178483779\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>New York Times DealBook Summit<\/u><\/a> this year, Altman didn\u2019t appear too worried about Musk\u2019s strong ties to Trump. \u201cI believe pretty strongly that Elon will do the right thing and that it would be profoundly un-American to use political power to the degree that Elon would hurt competitors and advantage his own businesses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"meta\" class=\"subhead\">Meta<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time Meta has donated to a presidential inaugural fund, but the company has previously supported both parties\u2019 convention committees, Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in an e-mail. <\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s $1-million donation to the Trump inaugural fund was made at Zuckerberg\u2019s request, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/mark-zuckerbergs-meta-donates-1-million-to-trumps-inaugural-fund-32a999c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg, who expressed concerns about Trump\u2019s immigration policies during his first presidency, has  been strengthening ties with Trump. He met with Trump over dinner at his private Mar-a-Lago club and gifted him a pair of Meta\u2019s Ray-Ban smart glasses, according to the Journal. <\/p>\n<p>After an attempted assassination of Trump in July, Zuckerberg told Bloomberg in an interview that Trump\u2019s reaction of raising his fist in the air was \u201cone of the most badass things I\u2019ve ever seen in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign has floated proposals that would affect  online platforms including legislation to \u201cdrastically limit the ability of big social media platforms to class=\"subhead\">Amazon<\/h3>\n<p>Bezos  is also trying to win over Trump and plans to meet the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago club next week, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/elections\/jeff-bezos-amazon-plans-to-donate-1-million-to-trumps-inauguration-dc3705ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Wall Street Journal<\/u><\/a> reported, citing people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The e-commerce giant contributed to Trump\u2019s first presidential inauguration in 2017, donating roughly $58,000. (Biden  reportedly wasn\u2019t accepting tech donations for his  2021 inauguration.)<\/p>\n<p>Trump has sparred with Amazon in the past, falsely accusing the Bezos-owned Washington Post of being a lobbyist for the tech giant. Trump also accused Amazon of a \u201cpost office scam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bezos\u2019 companies could benefit from Trump administration  policies.
