Keyu Tian, whose LinkedIn and Google Scholar pages list him as a master\u2019s student in computer science at Peking University, is the first author of one of two papers chosen Tuesday for the main Best Paper Award at the Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) conference, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/sobering-message-future-ai-party\/\">largest gathering<\/a> of machine-learning researchers in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2404.02905\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2404.02905&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2404.02905\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a>, titled \u201cVisual Autoregressive Modeling: Scalable Image Generation via Next-Scale Prediction,\u201d presents a new method for creating AI-generated images that Tian and four coauthors\u2014all affiliated with either ByteDance or Peking University\u2014claim is faster and more efficient than its predecessors. \u201cThe overall quality of the paper presentation, experimental validation and insights (scaling laws) give compelling reasons to experiment with this model,\u201d the NeurIPS Best Paper Award committee wrote in a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/blog.neurips.cc\/2024\/12\/10\/announcing-the-neurips-2024-best-paper-awards\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/blog.neurips.cc\/2024\/12\/10\/announcing-the-neurips-2024-best-paper-awards\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.neurips.cc\/2024\/12\/10\/announcing-the-neurips-2024-best-paper-awards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The committee\u2019s decision to grant the honor to Tian, whom ByteDance reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/bytedance-seeks-11-mln-damages-intern-ai-breach-case-report-says-2024-11-28\/?taid=67484adb8ca95f00019ab0aa&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">sued<\/a> for over $1 million in damages last month, claiming deliberate sabotage of other company research projects, quickly became the focus of wider discussions online about how NeurIPS is run and the way top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-the-ai-nobel-prizes-could-change-the-focus-of-research\/\">AI researchers<\/a> evaluate the work of their colleagues.
