It would help him cover the costs of building a new computer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAny money\u2019s good money at this point,\u201d said Wills, who is waiting for his check in the mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fortnite\u2019s in-game currency, V-Bucks, can be spent on cosmetics, weapons and outfits \u2014 known as skins \u2014 that enable players to make their avatars look like celebrities and fictional characters. To appear as John Wick, a player must spend about $19; <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/02\/arts\/music\/juice-wrld-fortnite-video-games.html\" title=\"\">the rapper Juice WRLD<\/a>, who died in 2019, is about $14. When it is not on sale, a bundle of Spider-Man outfits and paraphernalia costs almost $50.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Epic agreed in December 2022 to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/19\/business\/ftc-epic-games-settlement.html\" title=\"\">a $520 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission<\/a> that sent a strong signal that federal officials were taking a more assertive stance toward regulating the tech industry. Customers could ultimately receive $245 million for what the agency called Epic\u2019s use of \u201cdark patterns\u201d to trick millions of players into unwanted purchases. Another $275 million will settle accusations that the studio violated the Children\u2019s Online Privacy Protection Act.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A representative for Epic, which released Fortnite in 2017, said the company did not have additional comments beyond a statement it made when the settlement was announced.
