They embraced romantic ugliness and cutting self-reflection \u2014 and pushed pop forward.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00043b6mob1ou3cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The year arguably belonged to Charli XCX, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/11\/entertainment\/chappell-roan-who-is-cec\/index.html\">Chappell Roan<\/a> and Sabrina Carpenter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00053b6mz4gtoze1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople like Beyonc\u00e9 and Taylor Swift, who\u2019ve dominated for so long \u2014 they have a sheen and a polish to them that\u2019s somewhat unrelatable as a listener,\u201d said Sam Murphy, a music curator who analyzes and dissects pop on his popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@popsamcam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok account<\/a>. \u201cWhat people really craved this year, the TikTok generation, was to see more mess and chaos in people\u2019s lives. We wanted pop stars that we were able to see the flaws within and the charisma coming out.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00063b6magy6kcdu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The year  saw Charli, a boundary-pushing yet oft-overlooked pop veteran, finally escape what the New York Times once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/14\/arts\/music\/pop-musics-middle-class.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> \u201cpop\u2019s middle class\u201d with her defiant, sweat-soaked, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/23\/style\/brat-summer-green-explained\/index.html\">goopy-green<\/a> opus, \u201cBrat.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00073b6mvj2pbo95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year, Carpenter went from a supporting act on the <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sabrina-carpenter-praises-taylor-swift-for-ongoing-support-8724219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest-grossing tour<\/a> in history to a leading lady herself, with her endearingly silly, sexy songs topping the charts. (Here\u2019s where she\u2019d make a sex joke.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00083b6m8pozwhw1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <em>And<\/em> it was the year when everyone wanted to take things H-O-T T-O G-O, dance in the Pink Pony Club and wish their exes good luck, babe. Roan\u2019s debut album came out over a year ago, but it rapidly grew an audience this year as she took her act on the road and won us over.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00093b6mu677k7gu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            We loved this trio of stars because they <em>weren\u2019t<\/em> impenetrable like Beyonc\u00e9 or as towering as Swift. These artists were accessible to us, interacting with fans online and touring prolifically. Their music was personal and specific, with confessional lyrics about self-hatred, unrequited love and lust.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000a3b6m7gtf4rrm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It helps, of course, that their music is exciting and compulsively listenable, said Mike Errico, a musician and visiting assistant arts professor at New York University\u2019s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, who teaches songwriting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000b3b6mwqpdcpvj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe songs are great. They\u2019re great writers and vocalists, and they\u2019re working with great teams,\u201d Errico said. \u201c But they also have something very urgent to say.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000c3b6mnjdu4xme@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            None of these women became stars overnight \u2014 they\u2019ve been recording music since they were teenagers, steadily building an audience who jibed with their unique sound. Their music doesn\u2019t reinvent pop. But her titanic popularity has led to some \u201cfatigue\u201d among pop fans, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000g3b6mnt97efpk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think there\u2019s a level of polish that is really reflective of a bygone era of pop that people aren\u2019t relating to,\u201d Murphy said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000h3b6m1u4b0qa8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Part of why Charli, Roan and Carpenter are so magnetic is because their music <em>wasn\u2019t<\/em> made for everyone. They weren\u2019t the biggest pop stars in the world when they were writing their breakthrough albums, so they weren\u2019t beholden to an audience of millions. They\u2019ve each cultivated a sound so specific that it can\u2019t be mistaken for anything else.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000i3b6my0i6q2ke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe ubiquitous, all-satisfying pop star has disappeared, and instead these niches are becoming bigger and bigger,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cI think that\u2019s why it worked, that push that kept so much on that niche fanbase. It became so big to the point that it was able to start penetrating the mainstream conversation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000j3b6m4kgzta2j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mainstream, indeed. Some of the biggest songs of the year were made by this pop trifecta. \u201cEspresso,\u201d especially, was inescapable, as Spotify\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2024-12-04\/top-songs-artists-podcasts-audiobooks-albums-trends-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most-streamed song<\/a> globally with over <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/2qSkIjg1o9h3YT9RAgYN75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.6 billion <\/a>plays. \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d also scored over one billion streams, and it was Roan\u2019s only new single of the year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000k3b6mifhp7i8o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The craving for authentic pop stars reminds Murphy of the \u201ctransition from Instagram to TikTok, where your Instagram feed was all about being polished and showing the incredible life that you were leading, even if things were really falling apart behind the scenes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000l3b6my9wgngll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On TikTok, meanwhile, users approach their content with inspiring candor, sharing their lives, warts and all, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000m3b6mwploq9uf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Charli, Roan and Carpenter take the same approach to their music. Their respective breakout albums, \u201cBrat,\u201d \u201cThe Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess\u201d and \u201cShort n\u2019 Sweet,\u201d are all deeply personal, vibrant and, crucially, danceable records. That their voices or hearts might break along the way only adds to their considerable charms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000n3b6m1dhwmohl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Works from established artists who have a quality and reputation to uphold, like Grande\u2019s \u201cEternal Sunshine\u201d or Lipa\u2019s \u201cRadical Optimism\u201d \u2014 even \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d and \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department,\u201d which are both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/08\/entertainment\/grammy-nominations-2025\/index.html\">nominated<\/a> for album of the year at the Grammys \u2014 \u201dall just got blown out of the water by these moments that felt more exciting,\u201d Murphy said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000p3b6m4o5j5vka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            TikTok virality can turn a song into a hit, but it\u2019s the art of performance that turns an artist into a star.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000q3b6mswmdxzo3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t think what happened to Chappell this year (would have) happened without her live stage presence,\u201d Murphy said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000r3b6mqbera2tz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roan cut her teeth on Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s \u201cGuts\u201d tour earlier this year before joining the lineups of spring and summer musical festivals. We watched as her star rose steadily with every performance: In April, a clip of Roan performing the bridge of \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d dressed in sleazy latex and leather at Coachella won new fans who went back and discovered her debut album. With every tour stop, her audience grew.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000s3b6mv46opn4p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were watching that growth in real time, in tandem with incredible presentations of her music live,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to imagine that kind of thing happening even five years ago, pre-pandemic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000t3b6mnoo5kviy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Carpenter\u2019s trajectory was similar, supporting Swift on the Eras Tour before making some festival stops on her own and releasing the smash that introduced us all to the nonsensical phrase \u201cthat me espresso.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000u3b6mkt3goggr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These artists are meeting audiences where they\u2019re at, which is, overwhelmingly, on TikTok. Charli and Chappell regularly connect with their fans on the platform, candidly delivering news directly to followers in a video instead of a manager-approved statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr000v3b6md6r5rjx6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They also shirk the traditional promotional model of aiming for radio play to grow their fanbases, said music writer Reanna Cruz, who\u2019s written for New York magazine, Rolling Stone and NPR. While their sounds are clearly influenced by earlier acts \u2014 \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d builds to a Kate Bush-style bridge; Carpenter\u2019s latest album borrows from Shania Twain and Grande in parts; and Charli has mentioned electronic pioneers like Sophie and titans like Lou Reed and Daft Punk in \u201cBrat\u201d press \u2014 it\u2019s their approach to the genre whose rules and boundaries are well-known that make them such exciting artists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4mti3wr00123b6mmrpqhfqi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The artists make few compromises in their music. Charli\u2019s beats are tailor-made for the club, with lyrics vacillating between braggadocious bombast to reflections on grief and insecurity. It lends itself well to songs about hooking up with and falling hard for other women \u2014 still a rarity in mainstream pop.
