Mangum is serving time in prison on a second-degree murder conviction for killing her boyfriend.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4o8yjxx00003b6md7519fmk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The timeline of the North Carolina case begins in 2006, when Mangum said she was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/story\/duke-lacrosse-accuser-something-did-happen-to-me-\/3790668\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> trapped inside a bathroom<\/a>, sexually assaulted and raped by David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann at a team party where she was performing as an exotic dancer. The men were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/05\/16\/justice\/durham-lacrosse-scandal-settlement\/index.html\">arrested<\/a> following her allegations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n8zs5i000l3b6mtqfo1ns5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn\u2019t, and that was wrong. It takes place at a house on<a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/ng\/date\/2006-06-15\/segment\/01\"> North Buchanan Boulevard<\/a> in Durham. Mangum later accuses several players of raping her during the party early on March 14.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4nbyugw000o3b6mv29d7hcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u2022 <strong>March 28, 2006:<\/strong> Duke President Richard Brodhead <a href=\"https:\/\/today.duke.edu\/2006\/03\/lacrossestatement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspends team play for the men\u2019s lacrosse team<\/a>, a move widely criticized as premature since no formal charges had been made yet. Media attention intensifies, with early reports painting a picture of privileged, White lacrosse players being accused by a Black woman. Durham later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/05\/16\/justice\/durham-lacrosse-scandal-settlement\/index.html\">settles the lawsuit<\/a> in part with a one-time grant of $50,000 to the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4nbyugw00103b6m10exj7v9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u2022<strong> April 3, 2011:<\/strong> Mangum is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/duke-lacrosse-accuser-crystal-mangum-charged-in-stabbing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged<\/a> with stabbing her boyfriend, leading to a lengthy criminal trial, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/story\/mangum-found-guilty-in-boyfriend-s-stabbing-death\/13143246\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a> of second-degree murder in 2013.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n9ue5o00183b6my1wbq9dv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mangum has spent 11 years in prison, which she is getting through by reading the Bible and finding humor in her thoughts, she said in her interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letstalkwithkat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLet\u2019s Talk with Kat.\u201d<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n9uvle001j3b6mud7gjjl9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She wishes she could help children who were sexually abused, she told DePasquale. When asked if she could describe her experience in prison in one word, she says: \u201cGrowth.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n9uvle001m3b6m3fkcjtnn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before becoming an exotic dancer, she studied psychology at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina Central University<\/a>. The transition came from her searching for \u201cvalidation,\u201d she said in the interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n9uvle001n3b6mr23knn83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI was looking for love and acceptance from people,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople to love me, to accept me, to pay attention to me for validation. But you can get all of that in Jesus. He loves us just the way we are. That\u2019s what I learned in prison.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n9uvle001t3b6mpuq0cshj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI hurt my brothers and I hope they can forgive me and I want them to know that I love them and they didn\u2019t deserve that and I hope they can forgive me. I hope they can heal.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4nd9r5l00003b6mqo6lmpxb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An advocate for victims of sexual assault said rare cases like this might discourage victims from reporting sexual assault and cause people to wrongly doubt them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4nef5gt000n3b6mq4r9zjwv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFalse reports hurt not only the people falsely accused, they hurt every rape victim,\u201d Jennifer Simmons Kaleba, vice president of communications for RAINN, the nation\u2019s largest anti-sexual violence organization, told CNN. \u201cThere are already too many victims who do not report the crime for fear of not being believed. After a false report in such a high-profile case, even more survivors may be reluctant to come forward out of fear that law enforcement will not believe them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4o6akyr000a3b6m6sgc57xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A study published by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21164210\/#:~:text=Of%20the%20136%20cases%20of,between%202%25%20and%2010%25.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Violence Against Women<\/a> in 2010 found that false sexual assault reports range from between 2 to 10 percent.
