A PARTIAL BUILDING COLLAPSES IN THE CBD, CLOSING A STRETCH OF O\u2019KEEFE AVENUE JUST BLOCKS FROM POYDRAS. WE\u2019RE TOLD POLICE AND FIRE OFFICIALS RESPONDED TO THAT BUILDING IN THE 600 BLOCK OF O\u2019KEEFE. THAT\u2019S BETWEEN GERRARD AND LAFAYETTE STREETS. THE BUILDING WAS REPORTEDLY EVACUATED, AND THE NYPD SHUT DOWN O\u2019KEEFE TO KEEP PEDESTRIANS AND DRIVERS SAFE. WDSU REPORTER SHAWANDA JONES IS LIVE AT THE SCENE FOR US AND SHAWANDA, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? WELL, MORGAN, LIKE YOU SAID, I\u2019M HERE AT 611 O\u2019KEEFE AVENUE, WHERE A BUILDING IS SHOWING SERIOUS SIGNS OF STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. I\u2019M GOING TO STEP OUT OF THE WAY SO MY PHOTOJOURNALIST CAN SHOW YOU A BETTER LOOK. THE BRICKS FROM THE SIDE PANELING IS NOW ON THE GROUND. YOU CAN EVEN SEE THE FOUNDATION BUCKLING NOW. EMERGENCY CREWS EVACUATED, RESIDENTS EARLIER TONIGHT FROM SURROUNDING BUILDINGS. YOU HAVE THE CIVIC THEATER IN THE BACK. YOU HAVE MULTIPLE BUSINESSES SURROUNDING AND A VERY, VERY LARGE APARTMENT COMPLEX RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. ALL OF THOSE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED. AND O\u2019KEEFE AVENUE IS SHUT DOWN BETWEEN GERRARD AND POYDRAS STREET. POLICE AND FIRE CREWS ARE WORKING TO SECURE THE AREA, WHILE A CITY INSPECTOR EVALUATES THE BUILDING\u2019S STABILITY. NOW HERE\u2019S WHAT NEW ORLEANS FIRE CAPTAIN HAD TO SAY. IT LOOKS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HERE. IT\u2019S ONE OF THE REASONS WE STOPPED TRAFFIC. WE\u2019RE NOT SURE HOW BAD THIS BUILDING IS COMPROMISED. OF COURSE, IT\u2019S AT NIGHT HERE, SO IT\u2019S VERY DIFFICULT TO ASSESS. GUYS, THIS IS STILL A VERY ACTIVE SCENE. NOW, WE DO HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE WALKING OVER THE BARRIERS. PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT.
