The NHTSA issued the <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/laws-regulations\/standing-general-order-crash-reporting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Standing General Order;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Standing General Order<\/a> in 2021, stating that its goal is to gather data that could help it identify potential safety issues.<\/p>\n<p>The data has been used in investigations into crashes involving six companies so far, including Tesla and GM\u2019s Cruise (which is <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/transportation\/gm-ends-support-for-cruise-robotaxis-222300134.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:shutting down its robotaxi program;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">shutting down its robotaxi program<\/a> as of this week). Tesla \u201cdespises\u201d the reporting requirement and believes the data could be misleading to consumers, <em>Reuters<\/em> reports, citing sources close to Tesla executives. In a document seen by <em>Reuters<\/em>, the transition team in charge of making a 100-day strategy for automotive policy reportedly recommended that the incoming administration repeal the requirement, saying it calls for \u201cexcessive\u201d data collection.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unknown whether Elon Musk \u2014 who <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-277-million-trump-republican-candidates-donations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:donated over $250 million;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">donated over $250 million<\/a> to help Trump get elected and was chosen to lead the new \u201c<a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/elon-musk-will-lead-a-new-department-of-government-efficiency-donald-trump-says-015521217.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Department of Government Efficiency;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>\u201d alongside Vivek Ramaswamy \u2014 had any hand in the recommendation. Tesla has reported over 1,500 crashes, and accounted for 40 out of 45 fatal crashes reported to the NHTSA, <em>Reuters<\/em> reports.
