That is how some convicted felons say society looks at them, no matter the crime.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0007356m0pqjre0r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Around 19 million Americans have a felony conviction, and at least 79 million has a criminal record, which can mean an arrest, charges or a conviction. But having a felony conviction, whether it involves incarceration or not, can impact your life long after you have served your time and paid your debt to society, felons say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0008356m6xft5bx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is a stigma that sticks to convicted felons even years after the crime, says Bruce Western, professor of Sociology and Social Justice and director of the Justice Lab at Columbia University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0009356m2wwttq8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think the core content of criminal stigma is that it arouses fears that someone could behave violently or dishonestly,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s kind of what a criminal record is signaling to people.\u201d<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000a356mgkbkqd8v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many felons say their criminal records make it harder for them to find jobs. About 30% of people with criminal records are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamber.com\/workforce\/data-deep-dive-the-workforce-impact-of-second-chance-hiring-3#:~:text=The%20high%20rate%20of%20incarceration,a%20rate%20of%20only%2084%25.&amp;text=More%20astonishing%20is%20the%20profound,employment%20to%20reduce%20recidivism%20rates.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unemployed<\/a>. But that stigma did not appear to harm former president Donald Trump in the 2024 election. Less than six months after a New York jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/30\/politics\/donald-trump-hush-money-trial-verdict\/index.html\">convicted him of 34 felony counts<\/a> of falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to a porn star, Americans voted to return Trump to the presidency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000b356mibksyx0h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe president-elect, he contested the legitimacy of court action against him from the beginning,\u201d Western said. \u201cAnd I think his supporters, a lot of them found that pretty credible.\u201d In a poll after the trial, 83% of Republicans said they felt Trump\u2019s conviction was politically motivated, with just 17% saying it was not, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnorc.org\/projects\/about-half-approve-of-trumps-conviction-in-the-hush-money-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AP-NORC survey.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000c356m6rlhpno1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s crimes are considered white collar, which are usually nonviolent and often include fraud and corruption, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/about\/faqs\/what-is-white-collar-crime-and-how-is-the-fbi-combating-it#:~:text=The%20term%20%E2%80%9Cwhite%2Dcollar%20crime,Crime%20webpage%20for%20more%20information.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI<\/a>. White collar crime \u201cisn\u2019t thought of as threatening in the same way as street crime, and high-status white offenders are not as burdened by criminal stigma,\u201d Western said.<strong> <\/strong>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t hurt that he (Trump) is an older White man who is extremely wealthy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000d356m1it4qins@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Restrictions on convicted felons vary from state to state. In some states felons are ineligible to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/elections-and-campaigns\/felon-voting-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> vote<\/a>, unless specific requirements<strong> <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/05\/politics\/can-trump-vote-2024-election\/index.html\">as in Trump\u2019s case<\/a>) are met. Felons also can face <a href=\"https:\/\/ccresourcecenter.org\/restoration-2-2\/#:~:text=Summary:-,Loss%20&amp;%20restoration%20of%20civil\/firearms%20rights,sealing%20or%20expunging%20the%20conviction.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restrictions<\/a> on their ability to freely travel, serve as a juror, get a loan or qualify for public housing. In some states, felons can no longer hold public office.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000f356meg9p3vvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Western said his research shows that stable employment is crucial in helping felons avoid returning to crime<strong>.<\/strong> But while convicted felons can eventually find jobs, \u201cit\u2019s really at the bottom of the labor market,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s minimum-wage work, and there\u2019s no wage growth in that kind of work.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000g356mqosl2gt6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN spoke to six convicted felons and asked them about their struggles, their hopes and how they feel about President-elect Donald Trump. He accepted a plea deal that meant no jail time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000j356m10ye0gpw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nearly 10 years after that felony conviction, Jeremiah is still dealing with the effects of being labeled a felon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000k356mxbkfexsd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy conviction was in 2015 and here I am still trying to apply to these jobs, and they still hold that against me,\u201d he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000l356mcr5e4iog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He says he is an entrepreneur working in the trucking industry, but his criminal record keeps him from getting high-paying contracts that would allow him to work while staying close to his two young daughters. Jeremiah says he must take whatever job he can  \u2014 usually long-distance driving. Danielle says her job hunt has been difficult and that working as an independent contractor in administration and customer support is the only way she can be employed right now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000q356mimitfa5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her conviction \u201cput a halt on my life, on my career, on my mental stability,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s very disheartening.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000r356mzz08629l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Danielle says she is qualified for many jobs and has been offered some, but once the company does a background check \u201call of that goes out the window. He\u2019s also had convictions for theft and forgery. In 2003 he came out of prison for what he says was the last time after being convicted of driving under the influence (a misdemeanor), among other offenses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn000z356mql9j7xh4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since 2009 he\u2019s been working at a local community college after getting his associate degree in electrical technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0010356miv53wms3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite his academic achievements \u2014 he\u2019s also earned both a bachelor\u2019s degree and a master\u2019s in substance abuse counseling \u2013 Michael says he\u2019s found it difficult to advance in his career.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0011356m6ipss0vc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Based on his 15 years of experience, he applied for a higher-paying job as an electrical engineer at another company. During the job interview, when he was asked if there was anything else he wanted them to know, Michael was forthcoming about his felony convictions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0012356mq4vfn70f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI saw the shoulders slump and the heads went down,\u201d he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0013356m1bkyxhih@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He did not get the job.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0014356megh7qyfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now 22 years sober, Michael recently wrote a book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Living-Two-Faced-Jungle-Michael-Powell\/dp\/B0C6G87NM5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Living in a Two-faced Jungle<\/a>,\u201d about his struggles with drug addiction. Following her September release, she was placed under house arrest in Indiana. She was employed at a car lot but says she was let go because business was slow.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0018356mc8el6m46@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under the terms of her house arrest, whenever Alysha leaves home she must have people around her sign documents verifying her whereabouts at the given time. Alysha must also present these documents to hiring managers when she interviews for jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn0019356m9wp1x6t2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s definitely still a big stigma,\u201d she says. \u201cYou can see it pass on their face when I ask them, \u2018Hey can you sign my paper stating that I was here?\u2019 Their whole view of you just changes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001a356m67mi1x6u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey go from an excited, \u2018We-just-had-this-great-conversation\u2019 look, to their face just falls a little bit. They don\u2019t want you to realize it, but you can see it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001b356mo2n38gqm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alysha says that when she enters the final phase of her house arrest in a few months she\u2019ll no longer need to share those documents when interviewing for a job. Still, she says she\u2019s frustrated by the lack of job opportunities for people like her, especially since Trump\u2019s recent election. \u201cI don\u2019t wanna hear anything about my criminal history, because here we are. I\u2019m a felon, (Trump\u2019s) a felon,\u201d she says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001c356mdn3wjhc7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s crazy because a lot of the people that voted for (Trump) are probably a lot of the same people that at the end of my interview, if I pulled out this paper, I would see their face fall when they looked at me,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause I don\u2019t have a position of power, and I don\u2019t have money in my pocket.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001d356myllkmu7l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alysha hopes Trump\u2019s own convictions will lead him to pursue policies that help remove barriers for people who have been incarcerated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001e356m7xmb231l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf he\u2019s able to \u2026 get himself into this position of power with a background like that, he should do everything in his power to try and make sure that these restrictions that are being put on us, are at least lessened,\u201d she says. \u201cI understand we messed up, and we put ourselves in prison, but one mistake shouldn\u2019t cost somebody the rest of their life. He says it started with a felony conviction for drug possession and intent to distribute. Other felonies followed,  including burglary and possession of a firearm, along with probation violations. His most recent release from prison was in 2023 following a probation violation<strong> <\/strong>for a gun-related felony charge.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001h356mj64e1o8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He is now on a non-violent probation, which Georgia allows for felons the state believes are not a threat to society. Part of his probation requires he check in with the state twice a month, he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001i356ms31hh00v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After many months of trying, Jerail says he recently got a job as a janitorial technician with a private company.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001j356mms0sy58m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He is frustrated and sometimes angry at the difference in how he is treated compared with President-elect Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001k356m3pnsr5be@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt the end of the day, nobody is perfect \u2014 because look at our president,\u201d he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001l356mumtat7b7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHow<strong> <\/strong>can we have a president as a convicted felon and he can do what he wants to do, and he got way more felonies than me,\u201d he adds. \u201cI can\u2019t even leave the state of Georgia without permission. Between all his convictions for possession of firearms and drugs, he says he\u2019s served more than 20 years behind bars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001o356m2kqbjw22@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although he is currently employed at a distribution center, Andre says he\u2019s had consistent trouble finding jobs after getting out of prison.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001p356mxrduzsb7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEvery time I get out, I have a challenge of trying to get a job,\u201d Andre said. \u201cThey don\u2019t want to give you a second chance. When you can\u2019t find a job, it automatically turns you back into the criminal mindset.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001q356mf3srpxge@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Job applications shouldn\u2019t ask about criminal history if society is trying to help felons get back on their feet, he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001r356m923r0cyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Andre says he voted for Trump in the 2024 election and thinks Trump\u2019s criminal history gives him a perspective that not many politicians have.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lz6ywn001s356marm9gk3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s been through a lot of struggles that a lot of politicians have never seen,\u201d he says. \u201cA lot of lawmakers ain\u2019t never been on the wrong side of the law.
