We went from knowing basically nothing to having a good idea of what the future Tensor chips and the Pixel handset they\u2019ll power will have to offer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>One important unanswered question, however, is what modem would be used in the future Pixels. All the devices using Tensor chips designed in collaboration with Samsung used Exynos modems, presumably because they were the easiest to integrate, but with Google going fully independent, it doesn\u2019t necessarily have a reason to continue that practice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>We finally got an answer to this question and it\u2019s not what anybody expected. Thanks to a source inside Google, <em>Android Authority<\/em> has learned Google\u2019s plans regarding the modem it intends to use in the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidauthority.com\/google-pixel-10-3470386\/\">Pixel 10<\/a> series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_lj\" data-container-type=\"content\">\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>\nYou\u2019re reading an <strong>Authority Insights<\/strong> story. Google didn\u2019t have too much choice there, unless it wanted to build its own solution, which even with a premade 5G IP block, like Ceva\u2019s PentaG2, would be risky and much more expensive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>Before making its decision, Google evaluated all the available options, including Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon X75 modem, which is the same one used in Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidauthority.com\/apple-iphone-16-3368121\/\">iPhone 16 series<\/a>. Speaking of Apple, it plans to move away from Qualcomm to its inhouse modems in the coming years as well. Finally, though, for one reason or another, Google decided to go with MediaTek\u2019s (not yet released) T900 modem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><q>Even after evaluating a modem from Qualcomm, Google decided to use one from MediaTek.<\/q><\/p>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>Unfortunately, we know basically nothing about this new modem, except that it\u2019s based on MediaTek\u2019s \u201cM85\u201d generation modem IP. For reference, \u201cM70\u201d supported 3GPP Release 15 5G specification, \u201cM80\u201d upgraded to Release 16, so it\u2019s safe to assume \u201cM85\u201d will support Release 17 or even newer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>Unfortunately, we don\u2019t even really know that much about MediaTek\u2019s previous generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediatek.com\/products\/5g-broadband\/mediatek-t800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T800 modem<\/a> to make assumptions. While we do have a specs sheet, it doesn\u2019t tell us much (e.g., if it\u2019s manufactured on a Samsung or TSMC\u2019s process node). After all, Google is well aware that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidauthority.com\/google-tensor-g6-downgrades-3497725\/\">thermals and battery life are some of the largest issues<\/a> with Tensor-based Pixels, in large part due to their modems, and I doubt they\u2019d let the disaster that was the Pixel 6 happen again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>A MediaTek modem is definitely not what most expected \u2014 or wanted. A lot of you will probably even criticize this move after reading this article and declare the Pixel 10 a dead-on-arrival product, but I think it\u2019s way too early to say anything like that. We basically don\u2019t know anything specific about this modem and neither do we know much about how Qualcomm\u2019s external modems perform, as the only devices using them are iPhones. Not to mention that even Samsung, heavily criticized by many, managed to release a relatively decent modem \u2014 the Exynos Modem 5400 \u2014 and as a result of that, the Pixel 9 series has a pretty solid battery life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"d_e d_C\">\n<p>Ultimately, we\u2019ll have to wait and see how things look when Google releases the Pixel 10 series, but I doubt it will be anywhere near bad.
