How many times have you decided that you just need to get through a meeting or the last few hours of a road trip first, or that you really don\u2019t want to miss a second of the movie you just paid $25 to see?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkul000a3b6mn06qbnhs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Holding your pee in every so often generally can be harmless, but there are some cases in which the behavior can pose threats to your health, especially if it\u2019s a regular, learned behavior, said Dr. Jason Kim, clinical associate professor of urology at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University on Long Island, New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkul000b3b6medk2xz6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These risks stem from the reasons and the way we urinate in the first place.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkul000c3b6mul3qxwuu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a complex neurological system that controls urination,\u201d added Kim, who is also director of the university\u2019s Women\u2019s Pelvic Health and Continence Center. \u201cYour kidneys make urine, and then (it\u2019s) funneled down two tubes called ureters to the bladder. I\u2019d say normal bladder capacity is about 400 to 600 (cubic centimeters).\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkul000d3b6mrwrxpva8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once the bladder is about half full, nerve receptors tell the brain it\u2019s time to pee, and the brain tells your bladder to hold it until a socially acceptable time to urinate, Kim said. That\u2019s when the brain will send signals that relax the urethral sphincter muscle and make the bladder muscles contract to squeeze urine out, Kim said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkul000e3b6meh8les44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were built this way because if we just peed as we were walking along, let\u2019s say, the road, our predators would smell us,\u201d said Dr. David Shusterman, board certified urologist at NY Urology in New York City. \u201cUrine has concentrated toxins in it, which is why your body is trying to get rid of it \u2014 and so what ends up happening is you want to hold the toxins in because they have a smell to them, and you want to be able to excrete the toxins in a time where you\u2019re more protected.\u201d<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkul000f3b6m9ipqjwty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Based on this science, here\u2019s what else you need to know about the risks of holding your pee.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000g3b6m74ssws6w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Holding pee in can increase your risk of getting a urinary tract infection, or UTI, which results from bacteria entering the urinary tract.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000h3b6mdavpaxa1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While peeing ideally would flush out any new invaders, retaining urine can \u201ccreate a breeding ground for bacteria,\u201d Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist at Orlando Health and a CNN contributor, said via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000i3b6mq6vy7utj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This is why people, especially those with female anatomy, are told to pee after sex since the friction of sexual activity can push bacteria into the urethra.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000j3b6mw7b9zjdz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If left untreated, a UTI can ascend into the kidneys and result in the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15456-kidney-infection-pyelonephritis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kidney infection pyelonephritis<\/a>, Kim said. If that infection, too, goes unchecked, there can be a bloodstream infection or urosepsis \u2014 sepsis from a urinary source.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000k3b6muukvvqiq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over time, holding pee in too often can strain, and thus weaken, your bladder muscles, which then cannot generate enough force to empty the urine, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000l3b6m0n29gktr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This makes \u201cit harder to empty completely when you finally go,\u201d Brahmbhatt said. \u201cWhen that happens, you can enter a vicious cycle \u2014 more leftover urine means more risk for infections.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000m3b6m3shbtsxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consistently overriding bodily signals can make them start to be less evident or not work, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000n3b6mgcmg71ra@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe see a lot of this happening in nurses and teachers,\u201d Kim said. \u201cThey don\u2019t go to the bathroom at all throughout the day when they\u2019re on shift or in the classroom.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000o3b6m59fxum5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you can\u2019t pee, don\u2019t wait to see if something changes \u2014 seek evaluation from a doctor. Available treatments include <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/procedures\/15434-clean-intermittent-catheterization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-administered intermittent catheterization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/25028-suprapubic-catheter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long-term catheterization<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/conditions-and-care-areas\/treatments\/sacral-neuromodulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sacral neuromodulation<\/a> \u2014 a bladder pacemaker that can sometimes \u201crestore the ability for the bladder muscle to squeeze normally,\u201d Kim said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000p3b6m3zh1s93g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In more extreme cases, experts said, holding pee can cause urine to back up into the kidneys, which can lead to infections, kidney damage or <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15417-hydronephrosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydronephrosis<\/a>. The latter is a condition in which the kidneys swell and stretch from the buildup. Not emptying your bladder enough can also cause abdominal pain, cramping or bladder stones.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000q3b6m3ph78c1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Heeding your body\u2019s cues as quickly as you can is always best, experts said, especially since you never know when your urethra has encountered bacteria that could lead to a UTI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000r3b6mtay6zaqi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the average healthy person, however, holding your pee for up to a few hours a few times a week isn\u2019t likely to cause harm, experts said. But if regularly ignoring your urge to pee goes on for weeks or longer, you\u2019re putting your bladder and kidneys under unnecessary strain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000s3b6mdrcdujb5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are some people for whom delaying urinating can be more dangerous than usual, necessitating more diligence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000t3b6m3n5edo2r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That<strong> <\/strong>applies to those who may not be able to fight infections as well, including older people who may also experience a reduced capacity to urinate normally since aging can be accompanied by growing prostates (for men) and tightening urethras (for women), Shusterman said.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000u3b6mzx1bs1k7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those with <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15133-neurogenic-bladder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neurogenic bladder<\/a> or kidney disorders are also at greater risk of harm from holding their pee. <strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000v3b6mjp8f014s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People who are pregnant should also take extra care to honor the urge to pee, as they\u2019re already at <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/uti-during-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greater risk for UTIs<\/a> due to the increased weight and pressure of the uterus on the bladder, which can block urine from emptying, Shusterman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000w3b6mpp3g7n7d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you smoke or work around toxins such as gasoline, you\u2019re at higher risk of developing bladder cancer, Shusterman added, so peeing frequently is important for you, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000x3b6mgjg78frm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re holding your pee because you\u2019ve noticed you\u2019re running to the toilet unusually often, that could be a sign of overactive bladder syndrome, diabetes or a UTI, experts said. In this case, see a urologist who can help you get to the bottom of things and start you on some bladder training exercises.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4lhnkum000y3b6mhrk20h0a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re uncomfortable with public bathrooms, \u201cI get it,\u201d Brahmbhatt said via email. \u201cBut it\u2019s better to go when your body needs to than to hold it in. Carry some disinfecting wipes or a portable seat cover if it makes you more comfortable.
