It was formed when the North American continent nearly split. A large swath of volcanic rock remains. The scientists are examining whether water interacting with the rock is creating natural hydrogen, a fuel source with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/fuels\/hydrogen-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">near-zero<\/a>&#8221; heat-trapping fumes, all <a href=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/blog\/husker-scientists-exploring-hydrogen-energy-potential-from-underground-rift\/#:~:text=University%20of%20Nebraska%E2%80%93Lincoln%20researchers,reduce%20reliance%20on%20fossil%20fuels.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">per<\/a> Nebraska and the U.S. Department of Energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fascinating chemistry that happens when certain rocks contact water, creating a reaction that leaves hydrogen as a byproduct, as <a href=\"https:\/\/explorer.aapg.org\/story\/articleid\/67124\/hydrogen-from-rocks#:~:text=The%20process%20is%20known%20as,the%20hydrogen%20is%20left%20behind.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a> by AAPG Explorer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen is eyed by the government as a potential replacement for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/dirty-energy-fossil-fuel-sources\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"73\" title=\"79% of all power comes from 'dirty energy' sources \u2014 here's why experts are calling it a 'fueling failure'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dirty energy<\/a> sources. Planet-friendlier electrolysis can utilize renewable electricity to split hydrogen from water and oxygen, all per government <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/fuels\/hydrogen-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">information<\/a> on the fuel. If made naturally underground, the production concerns evaporate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though, the fuel has other critics, including the Sierra Club. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/does-use-hydrogen-produce-air-pollutants-such-nitrogen-oxides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fact sheet<\/a> from the environmental watchdog highlighted that hydrogen releases nitrogen oxide when combusted, a known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/does-use-hydrogen-produce-air-pollutants-such-nitrogen-oxides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lung-troubling<\/a> gas. For comparison, the DOE said the nitrogen oxide fumes are similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/methane-overheating-the-planet\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"44\" title=\"What is methane? How the potent gas is seriously overheating the planet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">natural gas<\/a> when it&#8217;s burnt to power a turbine.
