Bernie Sanders<\/a> warned Sunday that President Biden\u2019s pardoning of scandal-scarred son Hunter could set a \u201cdangerous\u201d precedent \u2014 while urging preemptive pardons for the likes of Dr. Anthony Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can all understand Biden trying to protect his son and his family,\u201d the 83-year-old pol (I-Vt.) told NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d But \u201cI think the precedent being set is kind of a dangerous one. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very wide-open pardon, which could, under different circumstances, lead to problems in terms of future presidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lefty Vermont Sen. Roosevelt \u2014 but said he still has serious concerns over Biden\u2019s pardon of his disgraced son Hunter. <span class=\"credit\">CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>President Biden broke his word and pardoned his troubled son Hunter earlier this month.  <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Biden went back on his word and issued a sweeping pardon Dec. 1 to his disgraced 54-year-old son, who had been set to face sentencing later this month for tax and gun crimes. <\/p>\n<p>Not only did the Democratic prez\u2019s highly controversial pardon cover his convict son\u2019s gun and tax charges, it also shields Hunter against any other \u201coffenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chorus of Democrats have both privately and publicly fretted that Hunter\u2019s \u201cfull and unconditional\u201d pardon could pave the way for President-elect Donald Trump to do the same for people \u2014 and leave the Dems not being able to rip him. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Trump, 78, has vowed to look at Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol rioters when it comes to pardons when he takes office next month.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders meanwhile said it might be wise for Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/08\/us-news\/trump-tries-to-defuse-panicky-liberal-fearmongering-over-him-teases-sweeping-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to very \u201cseriously\u201d consider preemptive pardons<\/a> \u2014 or those issued before probes targeting some people are even started \u2014 before he leaves the White House.<\/p>\n<p>White House officials and other Biden allies have reportedly floated the possibility of preemptive pardons for individuals such as Trump critics and ex-COVID-19 czar Dr. Anthony Fauci and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.).<\/p>\n<p>Sunday NBC anchor Kristen Welker noted how Trump argued that members of the since-defunct House Select Jan. 6 Committee \u2014 including Cheney \u2014 \u201cshould go to jail.\u201d Notably, Trump later clarified that he would not instruct his FBI director to pursue that. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>How The Post covered Biden\u2019s infamous pardon of Hunter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sanders, speaking about Biden issuing preemptive pardons, said, \u201cI think he might want to consider that very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vermont lefty called Trump\u2019s initial comment about \u201cjail\u2019 for the Jan. 6 probers \u201can outrageous statement \u2014 this is what authoritarianism is all about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not arrest elected officials who disagree with you, who undertake an investigation,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, President Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/12\/us-news\/biden-commutes-roughly-1500-sentences-and-pardons-39-people-in-biggest-single-day-act-of-clemency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">granted pardons and commuted sentences <\/a>for more than 1,500 individuals, including an official who stole stole $53 million from taxpayers, as well the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/12\/us-news\/biden-slammed-for-commuting-sentence-of-notorious-kids-for-cash-judge-michael-conahan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notorious Kids-for-Cash judge<\/a> who imprisoned juviniles for money.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his misgivings about Hunter\u2019s pardon, Sanders suggested that it wouldn\u2019t be too much of a blemish on the outgoing president\u2019s legacy. <\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tStart and end your day informed with our newsletters\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report and Evening Update: Your source for today&#8217;s top stories\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think his legacy is a strong legacy. I think President Biden, on domestic policies, has been perhaps the most progressive president in American history since FDR,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>During the wide-ranging interview, Sanders also did not rule out backing Health and Human Services designee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. \u2014 whom he commended on food policy but raised concerns over the Kennedy scion\u2019s vaccine skepticism. <\/p>\n<p>Sanders also expressed optimism about working with Trump to raise the minimum wage and opined on controversy over the gunning down of former UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The senator\u2019s colleague and progressive ally, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/11\/us-news\/elizabeth-warren-rationalizes-visceral-response-to-unitedhealthcare-ceo-murder-should-be-a-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had caused a stir when she said,<\/a> \u201cViolence is never the answer, but people can only be pushed so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hunter, a former drug addict and convicted tax cheat, has largely kept a low profile since his pardon. <span class=\"credit\">Coleman-Rayner for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Warren later clarified her comments by saying, \u201cViolence is never the answer. Period. I should have been much clearer that there is never a justification for murder.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sanders argued that Warren \u201cobviously understands killing and murder and shooting somebody in the back is totally unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I think has happened in the last few months is that what you have seen rising up is people\u2019s anger at a health-insurance industry which denies people the health care that they desperately need while [companies] make billions and billions of dollars in profit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Vermont Independent again reiterated that killing is \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have identified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/09\/us-news\/person-of-interest-in-fatal-shooting-of-unitedhealthcare-boss-brian-thompson-idd-as-luigi-mangione-an-ex-ivy-league-student\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tech whiz\u00a0Luigi Mangione<\/a>, 26,\u00a0as the suspected assassin. He is believed to have held a grudge against the healthcare industry at least partly because of his own dealings with it over his chronic back pain. <\/p>\n<p>Scores of people had glowed over Mangione online and seemingly sympathized with him.
