For nearly two decades, she has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/22\/nyregion\/eric-adams-advisers.html\" title=\"\">part of Mr. Adams\u2019s inner circle<\/a> as he rose through New York City politics. Ms. Lewis-Martin became known as a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/18\/nyregion\/ingrid-lewis-martin-adams.html\" title=\"\">fiercely loyal lieutenant<\/a>, negotiating political deals and fending off threats from opponents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Adams said Ms. Lewis-Martin \u201chas not been just a friend, a confidante and trusted adviser, but also a sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He continued: \u201cWe\u2019ve always talked about when this day would come, and while we\u2019ve long planned for it, it is still hard to know that Ingrid won\u2019t be right next door every day.
