According to Sci. News, Dulcibella camanchaca is the first large, active predatory amphipod creature found in the deep-sea zone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-1\">\n<p>The creature was discovered in <a class=\"manualbacklink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/mint-lounge\/style\/worlds-fashion-junk-is-hurting-chile-s-atacama-desert-111669871334734.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Atacama<\/a> Trench, or the Peru-Chile Trench. It is one of the most geographically isolated hadal features of the ocean. The rare living creature lacked \u201cpigmented eyes\u201d, displayed \u201capparent gigantism\u201d, and surprisingly used to feed other creatures, revealed a research published in Systematics and Biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\">\n<h2>Rare creature named darkness<\/h2>\n<p>Researches coined the genus name Dulcibella, which was inspired by Dulcinea del Toboso. Its second name, camanchaca, has been derived from a term which means \u2018<a class=\"manualbacklink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/us-news\/ran-out-of-missiles-in-20-minutes-and-how-us-pilots-fought-hundreds-of-iranian-missiles-drones-in-pitch-darkness-11731836342283.html\" rel=\"noopener\">darkness<\/a>\u2019 in local South American languages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<h2>See pics of the rare creature<\/h2>\n<p>The new predatory amphipod was discovered around 7,902 metres below the sea in Atacama Trench.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\">\n<p>The new creature was discovered last year during an Integrated Deep-Ocean Observing System (IDOOS) Expedition aboard the R\/V Abate Molina.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-11\">\n<h2>The discovery belongs to a new genus too<\/h2>\n<p>The DNA and morphology data of the species point out that the newly-discovered <a class=\"manualbacklink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/web-stories\/5-bizarre-creatures-found-in-active-volcano-zones-visual-story-11734062983423.html\" rel=\"noopener\">creature<\/a> belongs to a new genus. Which highlights the scope of further such discoveries in the Atacama Trench which can be assumed as an endemic hotspot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\">\n<p>Scientists discovered four dulcibella camanchaca individuals at a depth of 7,902 m using a lander vehicle, which is an untethered platform used for carrying scientific equipment, including baited traps, to and from the ocean floor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-14\">\n<p>\u201cThis study\u2019s collaborative effort and integrative approach confirmed Dulcibella camanchaca as a new species and highlight ongoing biodiversity discoveries in the Atacama Trench,\u201d Sci.news quoted Dr. Carolina Gonz\u00e1lez, a researcher at the Instituto Milenio de Oceanograf\u00eda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-15\">\n<h2>Why is this discovery extraordinary?<\/h2>\n<p>One of the key reasons which makes the discovery of D. camanchaca an extraordinary achievement is the fact that it is a predator. Most of the amphipods found in that depth rather scavenge or feed on detritus, natural waste material that is left after something has been used or broken up.
