In addition to a change in stool shape or consistency, this can include going to the bathroom more or less often.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Pencil-thin poop is one of the less common signs of colorectal cancer. \u201cWhen it exists, it is highly concerning,\u201d\u00a0Cecchini said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s just not one of the more common symptoms of the disease.\u201d The more widespread signs are blood in the stool and abdominal pain. Unintentional weight loss is another sign. You can undergo \u201cscreening with colonoscopy or stool-based tests,\u201d Cecchini said. Chat with your doctor to determine the best screening for you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">For most people, screenings start at 45. But if you have any of the symptoms mentioned above or meet certain criteria, you may be eligible for a <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=74679X1524629&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.buzzfeed.com%2Fjillianwilson%2Fcolon-cancer-sign-pencil-thin-narrow-stool-sc&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffpost.com%2Fentry%2Fcolonoscopy-before-45-signs_l_65f49ae5e4b08b384f1b377f&amp;xcust=7792198%7CRSS&amp;xs=1\" data-i13n=\"elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:colonoscopy before 45;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link  rapid-with-clickid etailiffa-link\">colonoscopy before 45<\/a>, Dueker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cAnyone with a first-degree relative \u2014 mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter \u2014 that has had colon cancer, especially if that person was diagnosed before the age of 50, is going to be at higher risk for colorectal cancer because of that family history, and should speak to their doctor about when they should start getting colonoscopies,\u201d\u00a0Dueker explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">If you\u2019ve had inflammatory bowel disease or radiation treatment to the pelvic or abdominal area, or if you have certain genetic syndromes or a personal history of colon cancer, you would also want to get a colonoscopy before 45, Dueker noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Suffice to say, it\u2019s important to keep your doctor informed of your medical history and any potential issues you might be experiencing. But while you should take all of this seriously, you also shouldn\u2019t panic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cAll of these symptoms don\u2019t necessarily mean &#8230; you have colon cancer,\u201d said Dueker. Instead, they could mean that a colonoscopy is necessary to determine what is going on.
