{"id":137747,"date":"2024-12-16T17:51:01","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T10:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=137747"},"modified":"2024-12-16T17:51:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T10:51:01","slug":"health-gap-at-end-of-life-is-now-wider-in-us-than-any-other-country-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=137747","title":{"rendered":"Health Gap at End of Life Is Now Wider in US Than Any Other Country : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Humans today are living longer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/today-s-older-people-are-physically-and-mentally-better-off-than-they-were-30-years-ago\">than ever before<\/a>, but how many of those added years are spent in good health?<\/p>\n<p>A data-crunching survey covering 183 member nations of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-does-the-world-health-organisation-do\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73079\" data-postid=\"146922\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">World Health Organization<\/a> has now confirmed what some scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4328740\/\">feared<\/a>: while years are being added to most people&#8217;s lives, healthy life is not being added to most people&#8217;s years.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that people around the world in 2019 were living 9.6 years of life burdened by disability or disease \u2013 an increase of 13 percent from 2000.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In that same time frame, global life expectancy has increased 6.5 years, and yet health-adjusted life expectancy has only increased 5.4 years.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In the US, the gap between lifespan and &#8216;healthspan&#8217; is growing particularly wide.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Between 2000 and 2019, life expectancy in the US increased from 79.2 to 80.7 years for women, and from 74.1 to 76.3 years for men.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>When adjusting for healthy years of added life, however, the span only increased by 0.6 years among men. And among women, while health-adjusted life expectancy fluctuated slightly over time, in 2019 it matched the figure seen in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The expanding gap means if an American woman lived to the expected 80.7 years of age, the last 12.4 years of her life would on average be impacted by disease or disability.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>According to public health researchers Armin Garmany and Andre Terzic, the healthspan-lifespan gap in the US is 29 percent higher than the global average.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The data show that gains in longevity are not matched with equivalent advances in healthy longevity. (Mayo Clinic)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The results align with previous studies from around the world, which typically consider one nation at a time, and which suggest that while women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/women-still-typically-outlive-men-but-that-gender-gap-is-slowly-closing\">tend to live longer <\/a>than men, they also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(24)00049-5\/fulltext\">accrue more unhealthy years of life<\/a>, mostly from chronic health conditions.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In light of these trends, the WHO recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/today-s-older-people-are-physically-and-mentally-better-off-than-they-were-30-years-ago\">introduced<\/a> a new metric known as health life expectancy (HALE) to try and measure the burden of disease and disability in older age, especially after 60.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, WHO and the United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ageing\/article\/51\/7\/afac147\/6625700?login=false\">declared<\/a> a 10-year global plan of action.
